Atari Dogs
I am having problems with my 5200. The joystick top bottons on both side do not work. Therefore, games like H.E.R.O. do not play properly. Now don't blame the joystick, because it works perfectly on my other 5200. Both my 5200's are 4 port, and I modified the one that does not work with the 2600 adapter. Any ideas? +Mitch
Does it only happen in the player one joystick port or all four? I suspect just the first port, which would seem to point to the 4052, for that port, going out. If all of the joystick ports have that problem then it's probably the Pokey chip. Atari Dogs
It happens in the first two, have not tried the last two.
Atari Dogs
If it is the Pokey chip, what does that mean. I will have to go through my Best Electronics catalog.
Bruce Tomlin
Have you tried more than one set of joysticks? Broken flex circuits (caused by opening the controllers without removing the start row bezel first) can cause fire buttons to not work. The other possiblity is one of the CMOS 4052 chips on the motherboard going bad, which requires desoldering work to replace.

(The Pokey chip does both the sound and some of reading the joysticks.)
Atari Dogs
I have tried two sets of joysticks. The top botton works on one of my 5200's but not the other.
+Mitch
If the Pokey is bad you have to replace it with a new one. The best way to test it is to temporarily borrow the Pokey from your working 5200 and replace the suspect one in your problem 5200. The 5200 service manual lists the OS ROM and 6502 as possible suspects as well but the Pokey is the number one target. Mitch

Voch
Check the pins on the controller port of the console. I had to "extend" a few of mine with a pair of pliers...they were shoved in by the previous owner and needed to be pulled back out. Bryan
I think we need a sticky 5200 joystick topic. -Bry
