Trak-ball problem

Hey all, I have a CX-22 Trak-ball. The problem is that Left and right work fine, but up and down is dead. Few questions. Do I have to break the seal on the bottom to open it? Can I fix it while keeping it closed somehow? help! I don't want to break the seal but if i have to, then i will.

It's really not as hard to open up as it would first appear.

Heh, my trak-ball is in pretty rough conditon, and the plastic on the bottom is almost yellow. I might just crack it open because i dont have the screw for the security bits

OK this is what is going on. the cd4011be chip is the problem. It is located on the left hand side, 2nd chip down. If i short pin 2 (touch a screwdriver to that pin), i can move up again. I figured this out because i was adjusting the assembly inside to see if it was a grounding problem, and i could move down again. I pinpointed what i did and found the problem. If I short Pins 1 and 2, I can move down again. Do I need to reseat this chip? I can't work on it anymore because I am on my way to work, but at least i found the problem.

Its fixed! turns out that when i touch pin two and short it out, it works, up and down. so i soldered a wire from pin 2 to the metal part of the stationary spinner on the inside of the trak-ball. At least it works.
