Help i cant play 2 players

i had my atari for about a year and have never played anything with two players.Now a friend came over and i decided to hook up my other controller and play 2 players, the game i put in was demon attack, but two players didnt work, am i doing somthing wrong, why wont it work. Help would be apriciated and sorry if this is a stupid question.

Hit the "select" switch and move to any of the following variations on Demon Attack for 2 player mode: 2,4,6,8,9,10. Some of these are special "co-op" mode, so you're both controlling the same cannon alternating every 4 seconds. Just try game 2 for starters.

Also, maybe your second Joystick controller isn't working. Try it in the left controller slot and see if player one can use that controller. The worst case scenerio is that the right port has a problem, but let's eliminate everything else before we think bad thoughts.
