miker
So... Tell us the approximate release date of your XL-XP The Tristesse group has shown their desktop working on latest QuaST. The matter is that there are still some bugs to eliminate, but (alas ) it's real. Btw. happy howling!

Very cool. Now we just need a web browser with a pic viewer built in. Or even a desktop with G2F style graphics for icons. ATARIeric
what makes atariXP better than atariME That looks cool! Very cool. Now we just need a web browser with a pic viewer built in. Gunstar
Isn't it possible to do the "rainbow" scrolling in GR.8 or atscii(text) screen modes? That would at least give it some color other than just the two tones. It would be kind of cool to have wallpaper similair to ATOS with the rainbow effect in the background. The main thing with desktops like TRS is to get the basic GUI apps included such as a WP, database, paint program(even if just high-res monochrome) and some accessories like desktop music players (for the standard Atari music file formats) as well as the picture viewers for GIF., TIFF, IBLM.,JPEG, MIC. and atari formats that include DLI/interlace support like Rambrandt and Technicolordream, and the new formats often talked about here at AA. Other stuff like a caluclator accessory, etc., you get the picture. Previous offerings like Diamond Paint and others would have some basics in this area and compatiblity with standard picture viewers and music players, but most take you away from the desktop to run the program. Even most of ATOS's "accessories" do this. 8-bit desktops need support for staying within the GUI environment and not dumping out of it, even if you can return to it (like ATOS). Goochman
It would be nice to have 'bands' of colors such that if folks wanted to organize stuff on the desktop they could use a color band for different types of apps - ie, blue for utils, green for games, etc....... Most people wouldn't use a WP or database program on the 8-bit, and graphics (like G2F) is being done more and more on the PC. Certainly, picture viewers and music players would be nice to have in the GUI but this is a lot of work. It's a bit of a chicken and egg thing. No one wants to write the programs for a GUI no one uses, and no one wants to use a GUI that doesn't have the programs. I think leaving the GUI to run most main applications is a good compromise, such as how ATOS does it. Using a RAM disk makes returning to the GUI faster too. For example, there have been quite a few music players released in the homebrew scene. these could have or could be written for a GUI like TRS or ATOS. Though I doubt we get get that nice 80-column text in a color mode like 15(7.5). Unless either the icons or text under them are done with sprites somehow, maybe evne software sprites. Shawn Jefferson
Most people wouldn't use a WP or database program on the 8-bit So what? 953685 So, most people don't want to code something that no one is going to use. Especially something as time consuming as a (good) WP and datbase program. But, prove me wrong! I'd love to see a really good GUI system on the 8-bit. Especially something as time consuming as a (good) WP and datbase program. Surely it does not make sense to write something that *no one* is going to use. But being a coder myself I tend to think that today's Atari 8-bit coders, if writing utility programs at all, write them mainly for themselves; so there is always at least one user - the author. What "most people" do or don't or won't or wouldn't - doesn't matter, as first of all, "most people" wouldn't use an Atari 8-bit or don't even know what is it. They simply don't count. That's true! http://www.jeffersonsauctioneering.com/atari/myide However, it sure helps motivate a person to add features, fix bugs, etc.. if you get some feedback. miker
Ok, G2F is good, but it's time for REAL stuff. Here are 2 screenshots of (still developed) TRS Desktop. One shows it in action and the second is added to show that Turbo Basic XL (which is written in) isn't as crappy as some people think. Ok - here it goes:

Ok - here it goes: 992877 Funny, I was just checking this out a couple of nights ago (from an earlier post which linked to some screen-shots). Are you part of the development team Miker, or just an admirer? I commend anyone who attempts to make a nice UI for the Atari. Looks to be promising, but is that a "pink" menu-bar I see ? Who thinks Turbo Basic XL is crappy!? A very powerful language, in the right hands... Edited January 3, 2006 by MrFish
miker
No, i'm not it the development team, just have received these screenshots from one of the authors (Pin/Tristesse) and he asked me to put them here. The first version of TRS Desktop will be released soon (about Feb./March if everything goes fine). Well, that's all for now. Stay tuned. Velcro_SP
@cgfatari79: Really like those screen mockups, well the first two anyway, that Rainbow desktop is a bit too tough on the eyes. @Miker Looks great. I'll see what else I can find out about TRS desktop.
Velcro_SP
Here's a page with lots of screenshots of TRS Desktop. On another subject... lgfatari79: I really like those icons and the look of your mock desktop, but the Atari 8bit cant do so many colors at that resolution I don't believe, certainly not operating as a desktop UI, with icons moving around. Maybe those icons could be converted to PM graphics or something. That would get some more colors on there. Maybe not multiple color icons, but overall you could have more color than a monochrome desktop.

atarixle
A little question: when will TRS-Desk be released? Is it planned to launch a website with more information? Will it be freeware/shareware? Which languages will be released? Are the TB-Sources available, or CTB only? gtx. Mirko www.atarixle.de
miker
Latest news from Tristesse: The first version of TRS Desktop will be released on FOREVER 2006 as FREEWARE. The sources will be available when the system becomes stable (about 2 months later) so there won't be sources for any alpha releases. The official site will appear as atari8.info subsite. That's all for now. Edited January 8, 2006 by miker
