1050 boot error

I have a 1050 hooked up to my 65XE. In the past I have owned 810's and XF551's but never a 1050 so I have no idea what to make of this. At the moment I have no disk to test in my drive. When I power it up with no disk in it - I get a repeating "boot error" message. What is happening here? Is my 1050 toast? Does anyone know if there is a diskless way to communicate with the drive to see if it send and receives with no problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

The fact that you get a boot error indicates that the drive is communicating with the computer.

About the only thing you can do without a disk is write a short program to send a STATUS command to the drive.

And all that will do is send back 4 bytes with bitflags telling you there's no disk in the drive.
