I'll throw in some categories that I'm aware of with an example or two, and * the one's I prefer to find more of: Top down, Berzerk room type * - Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves - Return of Heracles - Gateway to Apshai - Galahad and the Holy Grail (I'm surprised that 2600 Atari Adventure was never ported to the 8-Bit - are there any others similar aside from Galahad?) Text Adventures - Infocom (Zork, etc) - Softporn adventure Graphic/Text adventures (shows you a picture, but otherwise played like a text adventure - Adventure International series Top down RPG * - Ultima series - Autoduel First person RPG * - Alternate Reality - The City - Alternate Reality - The Dungeon Post your favorites, new categories, etc. Thanks for your input! Level 9 were pretty much the UK's answer to Infocom and the Silicon Dreams and Time and Magik trilogies are truly great, my personal two favourites being Return to Eden and Red Moon. The Jewels of Darkness trilogy was also good but a bit formulaic (Level 9 were still establishing their identity at this point). One of their later releases-Scapeghost was also a great game. I am sure you gonna like these: his dark majesty the hunt (from abbuc software contest) and phantastic journey 1 + 2 which are german commercial software from the 90ies, but I played ages...
