Tuner firmware update

SpiceWare

Been over a year since I checked the firmware on my tuners, so I downloaded the update tool and ran it:

I have the older HDHR3-US model, current version is HDHR4-2US. Looking at the firmware changelog I see that not much changed for my model since the 20140121 firmware:

  • Release 20150406 - HDHR3-US/DT/EU models: Fix reboot when DNS returns multiple IP addresses.
  • Release 20141124 - HDHR3-US/DT/EU models: Channel map automatically applied to both tuners.

There's also a new HDTC-2US model that has an interesting feature - it transcodes the content to H.264, which makes it work better with portable devices like my iPad. Another benefit, per this comment over at MacRumors, the H.264 recordings are about 1/4th the size of the MPEG2 recordings - so the 5.6 TB of content I currently have recorded would have only used up 1.4 TB of disk space. Might be worth considering instead of getting larger drives, though I do wonder how good the picture quality is :ponder:

H.264 quality will be similar to what you can achieve with 1 pass transcoding of the the MPEG2 recordings (which are effectively the OTA bitstream written to disk).

The quality of the 1 pass transcoding I do via handbrake can vary quite a bit depending upon the settings and the source material.

In reading their forum for new model, the transcoding has a number of settings including none. You configure the tuner with a default setting while the applications, if they know about it, can request a different setting. So the Mac could be set up to receive the original MPEG2 while the iPad could receive a H.264 stream. That could be beneficial in and of itself as the iPad often struggles with HD MPEG2 channels.
