Colony 7: More Bang for the Buck!

Hi there!

Ok, I got sidetracked a bit, playing way more G'n'G than I should have played... :D

Anyway, here's now another Colony 7 milestone, featuring no less than 20 brandnew marvellous explosion sprites from Nathan!

Besides all animation code for the explosions, I also tweaked lotsa issues introduced by that, like having destroyed cannons quit firing and other logical adjustments all over the place, like collision detection and the smartbomb animations for example.

Only thing that's missing from that area of the code now is the whole smartbomb execution and the Bummer behaviour. I need to check vs. the Arcade, what it does once a cannon is destroyed. I assume it just stops launching Bummers for that cannon, but I want to make sure.

This version also marks the end of any 4K MG contest ambitions for me this year. I'm down to 128 bytes of ROM with that now, having not even a skeleton of a real game in hands, so I'm bumping it up to 8K with the next version. Any attempt at a 4K version would I now not only consider a pointless waste of time, it'd also head into a totally wrong direction, as it'd require cutting things I already have.

Greetings,

Manuel

Looking cool! ;)

Thanks! ;)

Is there a change for supporting the Trakball?

You may use any trackball you want in Joystick mode :D

As for native TB support, I won't even try. I hate trackballs. (Didn't we already talk about that? Or where is this Deja Vu feeling coming from? ;) Bob would post "Blasphemer!" next, or? ;))

And the I'll say "you can use a ST or Amiga mouse instead". ;)

Nice work Manuel! Although I liked the previous version where I didn't keep getting killed all the time. ;)

But it's cool watching everything blow up.

Fun little quirk: if you lose your second cannon while holding the fire button down and it happens to be on the frame where your cursor is a solid shape (not cross-hairs), you can keep on killing stuff just by moving the now "permanently deadly" cursor over them. It looks like the cursor "sticks" at the last condition that it was in when your last cannon exploded.

(And for what it's worth, the arcade version of Colony 7 didn't use a trackball either.)

Sweet looking game, though it seems impossible to really defend the cannons.

Are the missiles/ball going to travel in more than one direction?

Thanks for catching that! ;)

Yup. Right now that's just a particle storm to test the collision detection ;)

Later the fighter ships will run strafing attacks on your colony and you have to shoot them as fast as possible to protect it.

BTW: Should there be an attachment for your bb update?
