Random thoughts for Friday evening

I recently pulled out my Dark City DVD, which I haven't watched in years. I had forgotten how good it was. Truly brilliant and definitely underappreciated.I've also been watching Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior) a lot lately. I noticed for the first time that the dune buggy Papagallo drives at the end was inherited from Humungus' gang. One of them drives it into the compound during the skirmish where Max delivers the rig. OK, not exactly an epiphany, but it's always fun to notice something new about a movie you've seen dozens of times. (Spoiler warning. Be sure to watch The Road Warrior before reading comments below.)Last I acquired my first Nevada quarter. This is best state quarter I've seen yet. :) Many designs try to cram in too many state symbols with no regard to coherence. For Nevada they drew a landscape of three mustangs running towards the foreground with a sunset (sunrise?) behind them. The image is framed with two branches on either side, in a nod to traditional coin designs. I can only assume they're sagebrush. What else is there in Nevada? Finally, I wish politicians who talk about freedom would stop the Cuba travel ban. Is a little consistency too much to ask for? Not that I have plans to go there, but I don't like being told it's illegal.Too much free time on my hands? Nah. I think about important stuff too. ;)

Hey, Dark City *is* important! :)

Do you know the way to Shell Beach?

While Alex Proyas only does very few movies it seems, he made a lot of my favourites: The Crow, Dark City and I, Robot

The Road Warrior is an awesome movie, as well. Saw it first, then went back and watched Mad Max. Why doesn't Mel Gibson do edgy, weird stuff like that anymore? Oh yeah, Jesus told him not to :) (*notes that that was purely a joke, please don't flame*)

You're right, of course. I'm glad someone has heard of this movie. I could watch Jennifer Connelly sing "Sway" all day. Not many actresses will influence my decision to see a film, but she does. (Li Gong is another.)

Same here. What did you think of Mad Max? I like it, but the sequel is superior.

Yeah, that was generally the way I felt, too. Road Warrior was much more entertaining to me, for whatever reason.

Plus the fact that the truck is filled with sand never gets old :)

It's the time-period between Mad Max and The Road Warrior that is of so much relevance to the world. The Road Warrior was the first movie to propose the idea that society will collapse over a third world war fought over energy. This is something that is becoming less sci-fi speculation and more of a reality with every passing day.

Someone's been reading about peak-oil. :) Yeah it crossed my mind that The Road Warrior is more realistic than generally regarded. You know it's serious when Bush, who has strong ties to the oil industry finally admits we're "addicted to oil". This is a man who six years ago criticized Al Gore for wanting to give tax breaks for hybrid vehicles. Seeing that people are becoming aware of the problem, I have hope that we can find a way out of this mess.

(BTW let's avoid getting addicted to nuclear power in the process.)
