Two less people at work

I came into work today only to learn that two of my co-workers were both let go by the company. I wasn't happy about one of them being let go. This guy was really cool and all and he tried to give me advice on women and all. He says that he was a roadie for a Grateful Dead cover band and that he once went to NYC with the band to meet women, etc. Randy is probably one of the coolest co-workers I ever had and now he's gone. Poof. All because of a background check that revealed something about him.My company recently decided to initiate background checks after someone who used to work there, went and raped and murdered a woman. After that, my company decided to initiate background checks on everyone in my dept. I'm not happy about it still, but I can deal. It's really too bad because now Randy doesn't have a job OR a place to live, having just been evicted from his apt last week. Fuck that. I hate how life works sometimes. The other guy that was let go, had plenty of problems but it's not like he didn't try to keep the job. He did a good job the first few months and afterwards, he just fell off the map and started screwing up. He's a really cool dude though and if I go to the Reggae Festival this year, I'll probably see him. He's a tall dude named Mike and he wears this really cool looking Rasta hat and all. I really wish they didn't let him go either. What I *really* hate about life, is how you take the time to get to know someone, only to watch them get fired or let go by the company. Why bother making friends then? Why bother opening up myself to people if they're just going to be GONE? If they're just going to pack up and move away? It really, really tears at me every time this happens. I hate it.

I've been working in a Kroger store for almost 19 years, and I've gotten to the point where I don't even get to know people anymore. As my neighborhood gradually gets worse and worse, turnover starts getting higher. We find it hard to hire new people anyway, because they keep failing their drug tests. There's hardly any nice women working there, and the ones that are usually have a pack of illigitemate kids in tow. I get to the point where I can't remember anyone's name, because there's no point trying to remember someone who will just leave in a few months.

It sounds like it could be more of a bother to get to know anyone in the first place. I still don't mind getting to know people a little better regardless. I rarely stay in touch with anyone that leaves my company though.
