Cheeeese!

I finally picked up Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and I have to say, it's a wonderful film!

I missed it in the theaters, but I wanted to get the DVD because I've been a fan of Nick Park's work since his Creature Comforts short. Wallace and Gromit are terrific characters, and it was great to see them in a feature-length film. And even though I don't think the Oscars usually provide any sort of real-world validity, I was glad to see this film win for best animated feature. It's a testament that good characters and storytelling are the key to good animation, and the more that can be done to get that point across, the better.

I won't spoil the movie by going into too much detail, but it's a good-natured parody of horror movies, with some genuinely unexpected and fun twists to the plot. The whole film is a treat to watch, and the amount of work put into it is staggering. This is a film that was lovingly crafted, and not just shoved out the door of some studio to make a few bucks.

The story and characters are engaging and funny, and there are some moments in the film which are pure joy. I don't find myself laughing out-loud at movies very often, but Wallace and Gromit managed to surprise and delight me throughout this film. For me, that's about the highest compliment I can pay any movie.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit jumps up near (or to) the top of my favorite animated features. This is a film I'll be watching again and again. The DVD offers quite a few nice extras too, with behind the scenes featurettes and commentary.

Highly recommended!

Well, one drawback with the DVD. I listened to the directors' commentary tonight, and whoever edited it together did a terrible job. While the audio from the movie is in sync with the picture, there are many places where the commentary isn't (it apparently wasn't recorded with any timecode, so the editor guessed at where the comments went). The directors will comment on a scene or joke, and sometimes it either hasn't happened yet, or happened a couple of minutes earlier. That's pretty shoddy, and someone should've checked that before signing off on it. It makes it pretty difficult to tell what they're talking about at times.

Still, the movie is great fun, and well worth getting.

BTW: Not sure wether it is true or not, but I thought my wife once told me that after the movie was finished the studio burned down and all models got destroyed

Not the studio - but their storage facility. Still, it was quite a tragedy. The fire happened during the opening weekend of the movie, too.

From Aardman's website:

On the day that Aardman celebrate a chart-topping opening weekend in the US with Wallace & Gromit 'The Curse of the Were-rabbit', news of a fire at our storage unit in Bristol has been devastating.

The facility used to store sets, awards, and historical artefacts, is not a part of the Aardman studio, and we are glad to report that no Aardman staff have been affected. However, we have lost a number of irreplaceable storyboards, awards, props and pieces of film memorabilia from our 30 year history.

None of the material from the new Wallace & Gromit film ‘The Curse of the Wererabbit’ was in storage at the time, but we have lost many original sets from Chicken Run, Creature Comforts, and the three Wallace & Gromit short films, that were used for reference and toured around the world for exhibition.

This will not in any way affect existing or future Aardman productions as 100% of sets and props are purpose built for each production.

Yes, it is true.
