Is that a problem? The Swedish 50 öre coin - equal to 0.08 CAD - was cancelled in October 2010 and I can't say I'm missing it. The EUR zone does have some small denominations but I believe countries within the EMU may optionally not mint those.

 

At first nostalgia sets in and the reaction is why change something that has always been there, but if the costs outweigh the benefits, it is better to retire those small coins before they entirely lose their value.

The only use I have for the USA Penney is dumping them into toll booth coin catchers.

I throw nickels and dimes into a piggy bank, then once in a while I grab a handful to buy a lotto ticket. If they eliminated the nickel I wouldn't miss it too much.

Ok. It's rare to buy something under 50c anyway.
