As I've been shuffling around routines to make room for an AtariAge splash screen and "Have you played Atari Today?" melody to Space Game, it occurred to me that it feels like defragmenting a drive by hand.

Optimizations to make everything fit and work is part of the fun of the development process. If I were starting from scratch now, I would likely make some more efficient design choices knowing what I know now, but I'm sure I would have found a way to fill up that space as well. :-)
