Score

I've decided to back-burner the AI routines to get some polish in place for the Midwest Gaming Classic.

This weekend I got the score routines in place, end of round & game messages, as well as a debounce routine. The debounce routine should eliminate the problem where a fireball occasionally gets stuck in a shield then flies off at maximum speed when you move your shield away.

For the Midwest Gaming Classic I've set the Game Winner to be determined by the first to win 2 games. I'll increase it to 5 later, and possibly add an option for selecting # of games to win.

I'm thinking about making the difficulty switches control the paddle direction for the top players. It feels like it might play better if the top players went in the opposite direction.

I don't like the appearance of the vertical text. If you don't want to use a 48-pixel kernel to splash the text horizontally, you might consider "zig"ging it.

How about a single 16-bit wide sprite representing a trophy with an R or G etched into it? I think that would look slicker.

I agree on the text - it's hard to read. I'm visiting relatives, my grandpa's having surgery in a couple hours and we're getting ready to head up to the hospital(4am is early :)), and I wanted to post what I was able to do over the weekend.

I was planning to change it to the 48 wide graphic, but I think I like the trophy idea better.

You could even have a small trophy for each round, and big trophy for the game, and at the end you could show the big trophy and also all the little trophies won, so it would show how many rounds were won. Each small trophy could be a single sprite wide, so you could show up to 6 of them in a single row, while the game trophy could make use of 48-wide techniques to be maybe 24 bits wide...

...by the way, on the topic of the blog entry, how about an AI contest? Lots of us programmers would have fun writing AIs to play against.

Awesome, keep up the good work :)

This is going directly to my CC2 when I get home.

I hope I'm low enough on the list to get a Kroc Cart, I'd love to be able to play this on my 2600...

Hmmm, small trophies would be better than just a number, makes it that much more unique. And I'm really liking that AI idea... that would be interesting.

That's an idea - though I don't think it'll make it in time for the MGC as I'd rather get an animated dragon in place.

I dunno - I'm looking forward to the AI routines, just wanted to get things like the score and animated dragon working for MGC.

Let me know if the the "shield/fireball" problem we talked about at your place has cleared up. I think I fixed, it but haven't had a lot of time to play test.
