Musically disinclined

I've modeled myself as a writer, a programmer, a teacher and even a mountain climber, but never as a composer.

I want some critique, as this is my first musical piece ever. Is this a piece of art or a piece of something else?

EDIT: OK, so I can't leave this alone. I've posted a new version that (I think) sounds better.

EDIT2: Added third version with percussion scaled back a bit.

It's definately very good. I especially liked the drawn out notes that sound like they get louder. What I didn't like so much was the really fast percussion. I think it would sound better at a higher pitch to sound more like a hihat, and left as-is in the 'snare' spots.

It's pretty impressive that this is your first composition, and it uses an instrument that is far from easy to compose with/for.

Thanks for the comments. I wasn't sure if anyone would notice the volume change on the long notes.

Now that you bring up the percussion, I decided to scale it back a little, as it does seem a little distracting. I posted another version.

Awesome, now it's perfect. I'm definately jealous!

The 2600 is sort of analogous to the Roland TB-303 in the synth world. It was created to allow musicians to program a fake bassist to accompany their practice on other instruments, and has since been used by really talented musicians to create all kinds of sounds it was never intended for. It's still used in a ton of techno, hip-hop, and pop releases, and even some rock ie White Zombie.

What both do is make think about how people had some really cool sh*t in the 70s that could do really amazing things far above and beyond what they got, and they had no clue. I realise the tools involved are completely different now, but I can't help but wish for a 303/2600 techno cd from that period.

That is pretty nice. Good work. Care to share your music driver?

And you should really write a kernel for this, they are fun to write and fun to look at. :)
