When you first power it on

Living Room Arcade

My most recent plan for NDA is for it to be a 32K ROM using RevEng's Multikernel Framework.  (See this post UPDATED PLAN FOR THE NDA ROM.)

I have been trying to work out in my head the details about how the game would look when you first power it on.  Here are my current ideas.

DETAILS

Spoiler

I'm going to speak as if NDA exists as a cartridge to plug into a real Atari 2600 console.  We assume there is a pair of paddle controllers plugged into the left controller port.

WHEN YOU PUT THE CARTRIDGE IN AND TURN IT ON

You see Night Driver, the arcade game on your TV screen.  It will be in the Attract Mode.  (The B&W version of the attract mode, like in the arcade version.)

IF YOU PRESS THE LEFT PADDLE BUTTON SEVERAL TIMES

Then you will end up playing the home version of Night Driver, the arcade game.  All defaults will be set to the arcade game.  That is, Instant Replay will be off, Ghost Car will be off.  You will choose Novice, Pro or Expert like in the arcade.  The standard arcade track will be selected (as opposed to the mirror image track, an alternate track or a randomly generated track if such options exist.)

IF YOU PRESS THE RIGHT PADDLE BUTTON ONCE

Then you will see the Main Menu as described here.  It looks like this:

MAIN MENU

  • ARCADE
  • 1V1
  • RALLY
  • MINI GAME
  • BACK <---

This menu gives you the options to play other game modes besides the arcade game.  You can play 1V1, Rally or the Mini Game from this menu.

WHY I LIKE THIS ARRANGEMENT

Spoiler

Because, to me, it's like the best of both worlds.  It's a 32K ROM with extra game modes packed in, but initially, when you plug it in and power it on, you see the arcade game on your TV.  And if you mash the left paddle button a few times, in a moment, you'll be playing the arcade game.  Later, maybe after you've read the game instructions, you might discover that this cartridge has other game modes, and that you can access them by pressing the button on paddle #2 to call up the main menu.  But, every time you plug this cartridge in, you're going to see the arcade game first, and it's going to default to all of the arcade game settings.

PROBLEMS/ISSUES

Spoiler

The Atari 2600 paddle controllers are not marked "left" and "right," so the player could accidentally start mashing the button on paddle #2 and bringing up the main menu instead of starting the arcade game.  So, that's a problem.
