Shep Banter for inquiring minds

This world makes me sad. But what makes me sadder is when arguments and harsh words are said in the Christian community that makes others stay away from the church and from having an open mind about faith in general. I was browsing the web recently and I have found myself stumbling on blogs that were run by gay men. What I read nearly brought me to tears on these blogs. They despise Christians and the church. And I can't help but say, "Why shouldn't they?" Churches everywhere have pointed their judgemental fingers at them, supported websites such as "Godhatesfags.com", and have talked down to them and about them. There is this huge struggle I was reading about how the church was writing letters to Kraft in digust for their support of some homosexual event. So the man in charge of this was bragging about how he got some of his pals to write letters to Kraft thanking them for support to show those "right-wing homophobes" what for. That's so childish I feel. On both sides. It makes me sad that Christians have caused something like this. Various links were spread about this website linking to articles about how Christians are just homophobes and such. How is Christ's love and saving grace being shown here? By condeming the Kraft Corporation for supporting some gay event? Yea, go church, we sure showed them! I love what Paul says about Christians getting involved in petty arguments. "23 Again I say, don't get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. 24 The Lord's servants must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone. They must be able to teach effectively and be patient with difficult people. 25 They should gently teach those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will believe the truth. 26 Then they will come to their senses and escape from the Devil's trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants." (2 Tim 2:23-26 NLT)...just something to chew on...what are your thoughts?

Alright, I'm not much of one for religion, but I'm reading "The Imitation of Christ" right now for fun and I just came across an applicable part.

"Strive to be patient with the faults and frailties of others, for you too have many faults that others have to bear...If you cannot mould yourself as you would wish, how can you expect other people to be entirely to your liking?...we wish to restrct the liberty of others; yet we are not willing to be denied anything ourselves...None is sufficient in himself; therefore we must support one another, help, teach, and advise one another."

I don't think the church getting angry at kraft and supporting bigoted websites is showing an attempt to bear with differences in others or to help or support anything. They seem to be taking the "Holier than thou" attitude that goes against everything Christianity is supposed to stand for. Makes me sad for really devout people who have actually bothered to understand what the Bible says.

I always find it funny that Jesus forgave the very people who were oppressing his people, while they were putting him to death, and yet there were "Chrisitans" on TV praying for the supreme court judges who were in favour of gay marriage to die. Yep, they certainly read the same Bible I did.

Just a quick note.

Alot of christians tend to forget about the love, mercy, and grace that allowed them to be saved in the 1st place.

An extension on that. For some people it is painful cause it reminds them of themselves and they strike out at it.

To a lesser extent, some are concerned about lack of godliness bringing down our nation. But then it's hard to say just how much because the new testament changed things so drastically that people tend to get stuck in "old testament" mode.

Regardless they get hung up on these nitpicks and forget where they came from and what brought them to where they are now.

Cant argue with you there though. Alot of Christians really are the reason so many people are turned off to religion. So the question you should ask yourself is if christians were more compasionate would it make a difference in how non-christians react/think of them.

My guess would be most likely not in large numbers. After all only those interested in listening will hear. Regardless it is inexcusable for either side to act that way, but unfortunately that is the way of the world and human nature.
