C64 Video Longplays

Hi there!

Uh... what is a longplay you ask? Well, It started out a dozen years ago as a monthly feature in the German 64'er magazine I think. (If the idea was just stolen from a foreign mag, I apologize for not knowing it any better ;))

A classic longplay in the 64'er magazine was a lengthy and very in-depth article or series of articles detailing with lots of screenshots how to beat a certain C64 start to finish. It was also often packed into some sort of story. If you ever read the Clue Book of the Bard's Tale, you know what I mean.

Well, with VICE getting the ability to record games in history files (not unlike MAME INPs), this idea was transferred to a new level. A C64 video longplay is nothing else than a video of some experienced gamer playing a game start to finish.

This is not to be confused with a speed run: The main aim is to show "How it's done", and not to rush and shortcut through everything.

The C64 video longplay scene is somewhat organized and they collect their recordings here:

For example I can recommend watching the "all 64 people rescued" Choplifter run, if you ever wanted to see that ;)

I'm now tempted to try such a recording myself, so maybe you see me trying to record a "Fort Apocalypse" longplay (or else) soon :)

Greetings,

Manuel

Very cool! :D

EDIT: Watched Choplifter, Galaga (82) ;), Hard Hat Mack, and Bionic Commando.

What are the controls in Bionic Commando; the C64 joystick has one button, right?

EDIT II: This is a great way to see what a system can do. That Galaga cracks me up - I was shocked when it first started - though it does look pretty smooth. Hard Hat Mack looks (slightly) and sounds (!) worse than the Atari 8bit version, which was a big surprise to me.

The HHM video isn't great, either - the guy plays through all three levels without dying, but doesn't play very well IMO.

The BC video is great until the last level, where the guy dies a couple times and doesn't play real well.

The Galaga and Choplifter videos are impressive.

Yup. IIRC if you're standing, then press the button, then move into a direction it works the arm. If you're moving and just tipping the button you fire. Sounds complicated, but it's actually very intuitive after practicing a few minutes.

That version of Galaga is one of the first german clone-a-everything games. I think we never invented a game at all :D

If you want to get an idea what the system really can do though, try Katakis!

(Superior german R-Type clone ;))

EDIT: I just saw that the Katakis recording has a problem: It seems that the used compression filters out the second/third paralax layer of the background, maybe misinterpreting it as background noise or so. In the game there's actually never a black background.

But still fun to watch :D

EDIT 2: And if you remember me making some mean jokes that "Tower Toppler" on the A8 looks like the spectrum version, have a look at the "Nebulus" video, to see where I come from :D

Greetings,

Manuel

It's based on VICE recordings, so only half of your excuse works ;)

I'm warming up on Fort Apocalypse. I can almost beat the first mission now :D

(Anyone knowing how many missions it actually has? :D)

I should, because I played through the C64 version back then. :D

Anyway, according to this interview, there are only two (out of five planned) levels in the Atari version. IIRC there where no more for the C64.

Thanks! That's interesting material!

(What's up with that idiot reviewer rating it only 1.5/4?!? History sure proved him wrong!)

I'm not sure if I ever beat it, but I remember for sure that it were at least two missions ;)

Actually, he says 50! :D

Originally, I had planned for fifty levels. But since we wanted to put it onto a cartridge instead of disk, I only had room for two.

Actually, he says 50! ;)

I suppose that number was too unbelievable for my subconsciousnes, so it "fixed" it. :D

Any 2600 version should have at least 3 levels.

Just thought to post a warning regarding the "Archon" video. It's a real pain to watch. The player is pretty bad. Choosing light he even manages to lose a Unicorn and the Djinni. Especially against the Banshees he seems to be pretty helpless and it seems more luck than anything else that he's winning it at all.

Well, I think Archon probably isn't really suited for that kind of recording. A good player will require only very few turns to win: Beam the unicorn to the other side, kill the bad boss, done.

Will do, thanks! ;)

BTW: They uploaded a couple of new ones today, Dino Eggs and Park Patrol amongst others. Didn't see them yet though.

Uihjah... Page 5 of the Fort Apocalypse manual reveals two things I never figured out myself: I always thought the "teleport" effect was just a bug in the game and I never knew that you could manipulate the barrier movement with the fire button! ;)

So, I can make it to the 2nd level pretty regular now. Once I manage to beat the game completely, I'll try recording something. In one game I already had such a spectacular run on the top area of mission 1, I really wish I had recorded that! :D

I think a 2600 version could turn out pretty good. And the more levels the better it gets :D
