Ark II

I just got in the Ark II DVDs. I was disappointed with the picture quality. It looks like maybe they shot this in 16mm and transferred it from a print instead of going back to the original negatives. But considering how obscure this show is to most, the treatment here is more than anyone could expect. The packaging in particular is great. A lot of nice touches. The inside of the slipcase is printed with a panorama of the interior of the Ark II. Unfortunately the packaging was mired by an inexcusable typo, referencing Forbidden Planet as having come out in 1965 instead of 1956. The documentary footage was very interesting. Jean Marie Hon looks amazing for 52. I just wish they would have tied the show to more recent environmental/energy concerns. They only hinted at that. You know these old shows really are an acquired taste. I don't think my daughter has the patience for them, or the stomach for the weird incidental music. I'm going to get the Isis one over the summer and see what she thinks of that.

Jason of Star Command comes out next Tuesday (May 8th). I'm thinking of picking up all three (Ark II, Space Academy and Jason) then. I'm still not sure if I'll be able to overcome the cheese factor or not, but I think they'll be fun to watch.

Recently, I picked up the Star Trek Animated Series box set, and I really enjoyed it. Sure, the animation is awful, but the voice acting is first-rate, and many of the stories were done by writers from the original series. In fact, several animated episodes were originally slated for the original series, but for one reason or other didn't make it to air. Most of the original cast is there, except their budget was so tight someone had to be left out (in this case, Walter Koenig). But he did end up writing one episode.

I did like Star Trek: TAS but the half-hour running time really held the show back. The characters appear to speed-read through the plot which saps it of any kind of drama. I noticed the same speed read thing in other animated shows like Sabrina or Recess but those are comedies.

I liked the way TAS expanded the TOS canon with different tech and aliens. It's too bad it didn't run longer. In retrospect, the TOS guys were really underutilized by just doing a film every couple years until they were too old. They should have done another series, but TNG made that impossible.
