Thrust

(NOT AN ACTUAL PICTURE OF MY SET... I have Combat Pack #30)

Well... I ended up dragging out the Thrust Combat Pack that I bought a while back from someone here to play it some more. When I had bought it, I was getting ready to move so I really did not get to spend a lot of time with it prior to packing it up for its trip to Michigan.

This past weekend... that changed.

After taking off all of the plastic ties and whatnot, I set down for an adventure on the Atari. Occasionally I feel like I want to give up collecting Atari. Simply sell it off. Then I start playing games like Thrust and I simply can't see how I'd do without.

This combat pack that I have is autographed by Thomas Jentzsch and Jafish... or somebody. It is numbered 30... (perhaps out of 50???). Either way, it is a great game.

I played it for a few days. I found out new stuff each time I played it. This is a game where you have to take it easy and try not to rush things too quickly... otherwise you die a horrible death and may not recover from that downward spiral. It is almost like playing pacman at the arcade. If you make it to the KEY levels, and screw up, well... it is very hard to recover from that and still move on to the next level.

The sound is great. The thrusting of the engine is amazing! I almost wish there was some background music, but in all... I think it is fine without it. Hell... it would probably distract me now that I think about it. I read a few reviews where people mentioned the graphics were so-so. I personally think the graphics look great. Here's a quick look at the two versions:

You see here a picture of Level 2 for the Atari version. This is a picture I nabbed off of the internet. Thrust is running from Stella in this picture, which, in my opinion, doesn't really do the color justice. I mention below that I like the C64 version's top line. Here's one thing I like a lot better regarding that top line for the Atari version: I like how he was able to get the FUEL to show up for the default... and then it alternates to the score if you do something that adds to your score. I personally don't look at the score that often. I can do that between levels if I need to. So that's a nice added touch.

blogentry-3390-1180473721_thumb.png

Now here is a sample of the same level... but for the C64. (Yet another internet nabbed picture).

Yes... the detail seems to be a bit clearer than the Atari version, but what really is missing? Not a whole lot. I like how the top line looks on the C64 version. It tells you your score, your fuel and how many ships you have. If I have any complaints at all... I think the Atari Version should show the lives a bit better. Its a bit hard to see the dots on the screen.

What makes this game click... is not just the graphics. It is the gameplay. I have never played an Atari Game as addicting to this one. NEVER. I've played a lot of Atari in my days. I used to have Donkey Kong contests with my friends. But I NEVER enjoyed a game as much as I enjoyed Thrust.

And the strange thing: It's hard as hell! Yet I still like it. One of the most amazing things about this game: the dead on accuracy for the collision detection. This isn't a game where you come close to the wall and die. This thing is spot on for hitting the wall... enemy... etc. If you die... you know why you died and you know that you can't cheat the game by bouncing off of a cave wall or something.

Just when you are getting the hang of things, you get a curveball thrown at you. Now, I didn't read the manual or many reviews before playing Thrust. So I basically was exploring everything for the first time on my own. Then I got to level 7. Reverse Gravity? Are you frickin' kidding me? Talk about something that'll mess you up! I have only made it to Level 9... so I really don't know what else is in store, but I hear that it is rather interesting. I hope that one day I'll be able to beat this game. It sure would be nice! I think I'm going to have to load this up on the PSP for plane rides and whatnot.

I suggest that people buy this game. Try it out in emulation if need be, but this is a game where playing it on the actual hardware makes it all worthwile. I am going to try the Driver controller one of these days to see if I can make my shots more exact. I think that is the biggest problem I was having for a little while. I simply could not hit the gunners.

Enjoy... I hope this small review in my blog will be helpful in the future to someone. Had I read reviews a long time ago, I would have been playing this game when it first came out.

Now I just need to see if it is worth grabbing the Thrust Platnium version. I may need to grab that one as well.

You must pick this up, man! Right now, I have to throw this game to the top of my list for fun factor. I know it is a bit more in the store... but it is worth every penny!

It's not a hack... and it isn't just a game with a fancy label.

By the way.... I tried it out with the driver controller... not too shabby. I can get to the reverse gravity levels on a more consistant basis. I just keep getting thrown into the walls on level 9. :)

If I didn't have to go bowling... I'd play some more this evening. But... I've got to try to bowl... and then come back home and do some work on the computer.

Gravitar.... I just noticed that I don't have this game. Crud. I'll have to pick it up some time. I was wanting to try it out after this game. LOL

I'm going to more than likely keep my vectrex now. I se that Thrust is available for that as well. The videos look really great.

Oh hell. That's JUST want I wanted to hear! The game is already kicking my ass on the 9th level. Heck... yesterday I got flustered on the 8th level and lost every single life trying to figure out how to control my ship. I think I growled at the TV a few times.

Something really deadly, eh? I can't imagine it getting much worse than Reverse Gravity. The only thing worse I could think of are like small bursts of EMP that knock out your thrusts or something at critical moments.

Shudder....

I don't even want to think about that! LOL

GREAT! If you drive me to having to drink a few cans of Guinness because of this... ... ... well.... I may have to thank you really. :) LOL

As much as I know I will regret saying this: I'm looking forward to this!

When does the word ADDICTION start to apply?

I've been playing this game like a madman. I still suck at reverse gravity. I've gotten to the point where I can easly get the reactor ball on top of my ship... but now I can't steer.

Also.... I've got this thing loaded to my work computer (I haven't really played there though), My home computer.... my PSP... and then of course the atari at the house.

If someone is using the TV, I use the PSP... or the computer. LOL One of these days I will beat this game. I hope.

I wish there was a way to practice nothing but Reverse gravity for a while. I may have to save the game on emulation (can you do that is Stella?) and keep trying.

Sweet! I'm getting better with the reverse gravity. I made it to level 11 (which is what... Level 5 repeat????)

I'm getting a lot better at moving that sucker around. My High score is now 88400

Gotta keep trying!

Next attempt:

I made it to Level 12. I lost every one of my guys there. I can't seem to manuever the ship and ball out of one tight corner. I thikn I lost 6 or 7 guys there. :)

Score: 104260

Umm..... perhaps I'm on the wrong level or something. I finally got past my Level 12 issue. Umm.... multiple times now.

Right now I am on a marathon game it appears. I just finished level 54. I'm not even sure how many times the score has rolled over (near every level that is a multiple of 11 or 12).

When I first played... I pushed select to where it is on level 5. then I started playing from there (the same level people used for the Thrust contest)

Has anyone ever gone 54 levels? My game is on pause and I'm going to leave it there while I grab a bite to eat and watch the Pistons game. Then I'll come back for a marathon finish... I hope.... LOL

Which game level should I be on in order to get to the finish... or am I on track. After each 12th level, I get the Increased Difficulty" screen... but I'm not seeing a real increase of difficulty.

Still lots of fun though! One bit of advice for people: Use your corners wisely. You can kill off the pesky gunners easily that way.

Variation 5....

And after 12... it said increased difficulty. Then it went back to level 1 (but it was level 13).... regular gravity. It kept in a loop after that. I flipped the score every 11 levels or so.

Yes, that the beginners mode. It doesn't allow you to get to the really nasty stuff. :)

Play variation 1 instead.

BTW: The score doesn't loop, the last digit modulo 5 represents the 100.000 digits. (complicated, I know)

You can, however, make the klystron pod fly through the reactor without registering a collision.

Just found this entry again. Did you eventually discover the "really deadly" stuff?

Nope I layed off for a bit. I haven't played much on the Atari 2600 front lately. I will have another go at it com Late DEC (after the 25th but before 1Jan)

I've been working on my portable, so that has kept me busy. But I just re-read this entire thread again and I'm in the mood all of a sudden. I may have to go home and try it out again on the big screen! :)

Really?! Not me. I thought the collision detection in this game was near perfect. It seems to be for me!

Yes, you can. Just make sure that the tow bar doesn't touch the reactor too.

The Klystron pod and reactor will both flicker at 30Hz if they're in the same horizontal 'zone'. Thus, they won't be on screen at the same time and won't collide. As the author noted, the tow bar does not flicker, though I don't remember collisions with it being checked (note that on half the frames, collisions between the tow bar and both sprites would be expected).

You are right, the tow bar isn't checked vs. other sprites.
