Spiderman's Obscure Endeavors

"What? Spiderman isn't friggin' obscure!" Is that what's running through your mind right now? Well, of course he isn't! It's not like I'm THAT stupid. Spiderman is probably one of the most well-known comic characters out there. However, in the world of videogames, Spiderman has both well-known and not-so-well-known works. Of course, you've probably played most of the more mainstream games, especially the ones published by Activision, but the wallcrawler has been in far more than just those. Here's a sampling of some "Under The Radar" Spiderman games. The Amazing Spiderman: Lethal Foes (Super Famicom)black_rabbit_2.zipOne of the few (if not the only) Japanese-exclusive Spiderman game, Lethal Foes is a dynamic platformer that follows in the same vein as Sinister Six for the Genesis. Developed by Epoch, the game has fluid animation and has some lesser-known villans as bosses (like Beetle, pictured above in the screenshot). Although this game will probably be a bitch to find on eBay, it is easily obtainable as a ROM file. The Amazing Spiderman (Atari ST)black_rabbit_2.zipAlthough this is another platformer, the game has an entirely different identity. The pace is much more plodding, but what makes the game fun is the one-button gameplay; the joystick (obviously) moves Spiderman, and the button (when combined with a specified direction) shoots his webbing in whichever direction you please. The gameplay involves some light puzzle-solving but has some combat elements as well. One of the most interesting elements of the game is the actual life bar, which is a large picture of Spiderman on the right-hand side of the screen. The more your life depletes, the more the picture will dissolve, revealing a grotesque skeleton. The game is also available for DOS-PC, but the ST has a much better color pallette (almost like an Xbox-PS2 comparison, no? :D )Questprobe Featuring Spiderman (PC)Published in the UK by Adventure International, this adventure game is, suprisingly enough, written by Scott Adams :!: . The storyline revolves around Quentin Beck, AKA Mysterio, the same villain that was abused (to comedic effect) in Activision's latest Spiderman game. The game is a typical IF offering with some laughable CGA graphics, but it's charming in a way. The Scott Adams tie alone makes this worth downloading if you're one of his fans.Spiderman: The Sinister Six (PC)post-5893-1100457955_thumb.jpgPublished in 1996 by Bryon Preiss Multimedia, this point-and-click adventure game offers smooth, vivid animation and some simple but fun arcade sequences and puzzle-solving. Although the game is somewhat maligned, it's still a fun romp for fans who want a change of pace from the more action-oriented Spiderman offerings. If you could only choose one Spiderman adventure game to play, make it this one, instead of the Questprobe game which pales in comparison. That's it for now. Be sure to check back, as I'll be working on a Spiderman game chronology that's sure to please the collectors. Till next time!Links:PC games: Home of the UnderdogsFamicom ROM: Emu RussiaAtari ST ROM: Little Green Desktop
