Playing Jackal (NES)

Hi there!

Phew... I got a bit sidetracked this month - I actually wanted to write a Playing article for Sokoban, not starting yet another 2600 project :lol:

Anyway, spending some time with yet another quality Konami title, Jackal:

This one seems to be pretty cool, too bad it never came out in Germany. At first glance it looks like your standard Commando clone, but it's a lot more fun actually. Also, it's more like a cross between Commando and Choplifter, since your main mission is actually rescuing hostages, which really feels like a top down version of Choplifter: You shoot buildings to crack them open, pick up the hostages running around and deliver them to a landing site.

There's also interesting boss battles, good graphics (scrolling also diagonally BTW :)), the usual Konami muzak and the game isn't too hard overall, so it's been great fun so far, playing approx. halfway through it now :)

Greetings,

Manuel

Ooooh, what a romantic end, helicopters in the sunset:

Cool game, recommended! :roll::)

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another vehicle driven shoot'em up in the form of "Marauder", but first it will continue with a racing game I think.

Jackal is GREAT! It gets a lot of play around here. I had not yet seen the ending screen (didn't realize it would end!)

Very cool.

I was a bit rushing through it, since after every level I beat without loosing a life I did save the state. I think I could beat it in a single go by now though. The trick is going much slower than in Commando. From Commando you're used to race full speed, but in Jackal take the time to explore. What also helps is approaching some of the end bosses from the sides, so you can take them out little by little, instead of facing their full fire power all at once :roll:

You vouch for Iron Tank? Never played it, but I like me some Jackal, so if you promise I'll get the same kind of Jackal-ly fun out of Iron Tank, I'll go get it!

Thanks for the recommendation, yes! Unfortunately also emulation only for me, just like Jackal was it not released in Germany.

Hmmm. Just briefly replayed Iron Tank and it isn't as good as I remembered. Still pretty good, but not as good as Jackal.

For NES overhead-scroll shoot-em-ups, though, I swear by Guerrilla War. Absolutely brilliant. And it has vehicles too, if that floats your boat.

I remember renting Ikari Warriors - whooee, that was disappointing. Sooooo....slooooowwwww....

But Guerrilla War is so great, though. It's a flickery mess, of course, but that comes with the territory. Great weapons, fast moving, varied scenery, even a fun (and odd!) Indiana-Jones-ish mine cart level where you rescue prisoners with lassoes!
