Fairly big update. Hopefully this will help with those having problems with the end game.

 

What's new:

- The princess will be outside the castle if you've freed her (just don't expect her to be happy to see you if you haven't completed the entire quest :P ).

- New location that leads to a new level. Somewhere on the lower levels is a randomly placed cave entrance. Hit fire to enter the "Cave of the Dead" (so named because it is populated only with ghosts). Hidden somewhere in the cave is the Holy Grail. If you find it and drink from it nice things will happen. ;) Not required to win the game, but a nice little side quest that can help you out.

- Some more behind the scenes cleanup.

 

As usual, let me know if you find any bugs or see any screen rolls (so far I haven't seen any, but I haven't had much time to test).

I did notice that when you go outside the castle the princess is drawn as the up staircase for 1 frame.

I saw a jitter last night, it caught me off guard so I'm not sure what caused it. It was much less of a jitter than the prior ones(maybe 1 scan line).

 

The Cave of the Dead is neat, but it took the game from being quite hard to fairly easy.

 

I was thinking that maybe you need a couple more chest items:

  • one that heals you 1/2 of your hit points - if your Max HP is 12 and you're at 4 then the chest heal will put you at 10(4 + 12/2). The cure would never make your HP exceed your Max HP, so if your Max was 12 and you're at 8 then chest heal would only put you at 12.
  • a cache of scrolls that adds more than 2 spell points.

I'm not sure if you're set up to find multiple shields, boots or crowns, but you should be able to find multiple Chest Heal and Scroll Caches. Maybe Food would make more sense than Chest Heal?

 

And speaking of spell points, the Cure Heavy Wounds doesn't seem to cure enough. It seems as if 4 Cure Light Wounds heals me the same amount or more than 1 Cure Heavy Wound.

Everything will be play balanced out eventually. I figured it would probably be too easy as it was, but I'm too familiar with the game and it is hard for me to judge. How does this sound - it maxes out your hp (to whatever you current max is) and only gives you 10 sp?

No food. I always hated that in games that had it.

There is a range it can be. And yes, that could happen. Again, I'll play balance it out soon. Everybody please feel free to make your suggestions now.

Or how does this sound, the Cave of the Dead only appears if the diff. switch is set to B? A - no cave.

This is looking really good! I was finally able to find the princess and defeat the demon (with 1 HP to spare! :cool:...

 

One possible bug: yesterday I was playing a game and the passage to the cave was on the same spot as the stairs going down to the next level. In this instance, I could not finish the game since I could only re-enter the cave and not descend to the next level (hope that makes sense!). Otherwise, the game played very well.

 

Suggestions:

 

- Any way you can put in a animated swing of you player's sword when you attack? (similar to the animated attacks of your foes)

Makes perfect sense. I tried to prevent that, but my logic was apparently off. I'll take a look at it.

Possibly. I'm trying to hold back a little graphic space for the time being for other stuff. We'll see what's left over.

Yep, balancing everything can take a bit :cool:

 

If you add the "Chest Heal" and the Cache of Scolls then perhaps the Holy Grail should only take your HPs to 20 and do nothing for spell points.
