Playing Out Run (Genesis)

Hi there!

I'm rarely "Playing..." racing games, but I don't mind having a closer look every once in a while:

I remember playing a round or two every time I saw it somewhere in my youth, but never really cared about getting a home version. The C64 version was rated 20% in Happy Computer and later the Amiga had much better offerings like e.g. Test Drive 2 or Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge.

I thought the best version should be the Genesis one, after all coming from Sega themselves. Still, it's no competition for the Arcade. The graphics are tolerable in most parts, seizure inducing in others, and the easy listening background MIDI music is horribly boring.

The end is a neat little animated sequence though, nicely rewarding the hour I spent getting there:

Personally I won't add it to my collection - but then I normally don't buy racing games anyway

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Turbo Out Run", but first it'll continue with something else.

Too bad... Outrun is my favorite racing game of all time! The feel of the whole thing really sucks me in - no competition, just cruising along a beach while a comfy smooth jazz soundtrack plays in the background.

But then I'm a total sucker for 2d parallax racers anyway. Lotus Turbo Challenge on the Genesis isn't bad... Lotus II RECS loses a bit of appeal as the randomly generated courses aren't as detailed as the original. Plus I think the challenge has gone down.
