Playing Might & Magic 2 (SNES)

Hi there!

Ah, this sure looks miles better than the first Might & Magic:

Good to see that New World computing did their homeworks in the art department. There's only one year between the first two games of the series, but the difference is amazing.

This entry in the "Playing..." series nails another two firsts: This is not only the first time ever I'm playing a real sequel to a game featured previously, but it's also the first Super Nintendo game.

I've been jumping a bit into the cold water with this one, since unlike usually with such complex RPGs, I did not read the manual first. I thought after playing the first game already and with the controller being limited to just four buttons I should be able to handle it on my own

So far this first night has been good. Just as with the first game, I expectedly spent the time almost exclusively with "staying alive" and levelling up my characters, so now they can move some squares around without dying.

The graphics are superb and so is the audio. The controls are smooth and not overly complex or tedious, so I think it's safe to say that trying the SNES version was a very good idea. In case you've been wondering about the screenshot above, yes, there's indeed a german translation available ;)

Wish me luck when I'm descending into the first dungeon tomorrow...

Greetings,

Manuel

Phew... while the graphics were changed in this sequel, the insane difficulty level of the predecessor wasn't. So while playing over three hours tonight, I was only able to examine about one third of the first dungeon

I must admit that it was still fun though :)

Continuing after a day off, tonight I completed the first dungeon. It's right under the city where you start. In the city you also get your first two quests, which both send you into this dungeon, nothing special.

After that I teleported to the next city. It seems there's a dungeon underneath as well.

Overall it's starting to get a bit repetitive, especially when there's little to no story happening and 80% of the time are battle encounters. They are fun, but well, repetitive.

When visiting the third city tonight, I was already expecting yet another dungeon underneath

There's been some very tough battles in the previous dungeon which I had no chance in succeeding - my whole party got slaughtered before I even had a turn ;) I'm not sure if I'm just too weak for these right now, or if I'm missing something essential for the moment. :)

Of course, cities 4 and 5 had dungeons as well. Still, within 5 days I only managed to beat the first two quests, so basically 99% of the time I spent with the game were character management and over 200 random encounters. That's fun for a while, but overall I've really been missing a good story.

Like with the first game of the series, I think I only scratched the surface, seeing less than a tenth of the games content. So maybe the main storyline would unfold later in the game, while I've just been stuck in an enhanced game mechanics tutorial

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Might & Magic III", but first it'll continue with something else.
