SIO2SD/XM301 Case Conversion 2

I finally managed to find some of my preferred ribbon cable this morning (not so keen on the copper core stuff), so we're ready to wire to LCD back up to the PCB. If the unit still works after this stage, we're well on the way. Otherwise, we have some serious explaining to the client to do...

First job is to trim the ribbon cable. I've peeled away sixteen strands, cut them to about six inches in length, spayed the ends and stripped them. I then tin them:

Having tinned both ends of the ribbon cable, it's a simple case of soldering one end to the PCB where the pin header used to be, and the other to the LCD.

There's enough solder on the tinned ends to tack the wires in place. When they're all done, I simply go over the back of the board with some extra solder. The main thing to avoid here is any stray strands which could cause a short if the cable is twisted.

Be careful to wire the LCD up in its original orientation. The cable is going to have to twist in order for the SD Card slot to be at the front of the case.

Looks OK, so let's hook everything up and test it:

Everything's working perfectly. I need to locate some spare LEDs before we can continue with the wiring, so next up, I'll start cutting the case.
