Best handheld for retrogaming?
During my last trip to Korea for the Korea Games Conference last year, I was quite intrigued by a tiny handheld console named "Wiz" and manufactured by the Korean company GPHoldings. I heard of these guys already, of course, thanks to their previous models, but the Wiz came out as a novelty and a much better item compared to their earlier products.
Unfortunately they were just showing it at the conference and not selling it so I had to wait till back home: I sold my PSP and ordered the Wiz through a Hong-Kong based shop (Play-Asia).
What is really smart about the Wiz is that, while also having its own commercial carts (limited choice for now but hopefully the catalog will get more interesting soon...), it is a Linux based console open to hobbyists and homebrew developers. And... obviously this means plenty of emulators have already been developed or ported (including Stella) making this a really great choice (I'd dare to say the "best" one) for playing old games up to the early 1990s.
Besides, the Wiz also has excellent media capabilities (movies, music, ebooks…)and the community seems pretty active and friendly.
In conclusion, I think GPHoldings did a great job overall and, while its ad-line is "Whatever you want", I'd actually feel it's a great platform to use somebody else's "It simply does everything" motto!
