Playing Beam (C64)

Hi there!

Enough with the clones! Today I tried a pretty original action puzzler:

beam.gif

Normally I'm shying away from these, since they usually have 200 and more levels, but this one was advertized to have 27 only, so I gave it a try

This is one of the rare playable games from German developer Magic Bytes. They usually did games with good graphics and music (Beam qualifies here as well!), but most of them where total disasters, often scoring less than 20% in magazines :o

Well, this one was fun to play until the 16th or 17th level pictured above, where I have a feeling that it is unsolvable :ponder:

You see, you're controlling this small white ship and the goal of each level is to connect some kind of generators with energy beams. There's all kinds of tiles with certain effects, like teleporters, magnets, death tiles, etc. which usually make for a diverse and challenging level design.

Now once I connect the beam on the bottom of this particular level though, which is required to open the door on top, at the same time it also blocks the way out to the exit on the bottom left

I think there's either an additional teleporter missing in this levels design, or the active beam spot should've been on the right side instead of on the left on the start of the level.

Ah well, I asked for help on lemon64, so we'll see tomorrow if I can possibly continue playing this game somehow :)

Greetings,

Manuel

Bah! :)

Since none on lemon64 had an idea either, I switched to another crack of this game with a level skip trainer to bypass this level. Only three levels later I hit another one seemingly unsovable. It had a 35 second time limit and in my fastest try I didn't manage to clear half of it!

In my rage I then just skipped through the rest of the levels to see that the game just loops back to the beginning...

I should've known better, one definitely has to stay away from all Magic Bytes games.

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another puzzle game in the form of "Puzznic", but first it'll continue with something else.
