Hi there!
Someone call a doctor, this is my 3rd article on a sports game in a row:
From almost a dozen golf games available on the NES, this one particularly sparked my interest, mainly from a technical level, since it is the conversion of a C64/DOS game, two machines with nearly unlimited RAM when compared to the NES.
It looks somewhat okay and the same can be said about the SFX and menu music. The 3rd person 3D scenery takes a few seconds to compute, but it's not half as bad as I expected it to be.
Like most 8-Bit golf games it is otherwise quite limited. You can aim left or right and then execute a shot with the usual triple of timed button presses. In the "normal" game I played, the game automatically suggests the best suited club and the wind has only a very limited effect on the flightpath of the ball.
No wonder that I managed to stay under par in my second round through the 18 holes already. They were handpicked real life favorites of Jack Nicklaus so they were quite varied and well designed.
I would never actually buy such a game for my NES collection, but it seems doing okay for a sports game
Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another golf game in the form of "Greg Normans Ultimate Golf", but first it'll continue with something else.
Greetings,
Manuel
