Playing Running Man (C64)

Hi there!

Uihjah. It's been a while since I featured C64 graphics that bad:

In case you're wondering: Yes, that's indeed the officially licensed game based on the movie. It's hard to tell from the screenshot, but the guy on the left represents Arnold Schwarzenegger and the other is the Icehockey enemy from early in the movie.

If you thought the looks were already the games major problem, just wait until you try playing it, it only gets worse from there. (It's definitely listed in the Worst 100 C64 Games on Lemon64 for a reason ;))

For getting an idea of the gameplay, think of a feature reduced Double Dragon. First make it flat, so that you can only move left and right. Then remove all enemies from the levels except the end bosses and 1-2 dogs. Place one extra weapon ready for the player to pick up in each level.

That's basically the first 4 levels. Walk a while to the right, kill the dogs in your path, then fight the endboss using either your punch or the kick move. Another cool feature is that your health bar slowly refills all by itself. So even if one of the dogs (or... *gasp* ...both of them!) manages to hit you, you can just wait until your health is restored to the maximum.

In the 5th level you're back for revenge in the TV studio, where for a change you find a gun, so you can shoot some of the security personel.

After about 20 minutes you'll get to see a small animated ending scene showing Arnies escape, which is just as ugly as the rest of the game:

Almost forgot to mention that the background music is pretty annoying as well...

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another Schwarzenegger movie tie-in in the form of "Red Heat", but first it'll continue with something else.

Greetings,

Manuel
