Hi there!
Another game from the French uhm... Kult developer Exxos:
Just for some trivia background, Kult was the last game from Exxos before they got assimilated into Infogrames. The team would 2 years later leave Infogrames again and rebirth as Cryo Interactive Entertainment.
Kult is an early multi screen point & click adventure. As far as I remember was it the first to implement intelligent, context sensitive mouse menus.
It takes place in an alien world, where different races struggle for survival. There's the bad guys, reptilians called Protozork and the good guys, human like Tuners with psi powers.
Like Exxos' previous games "Purple Saturday" and "Captain Planet" does the game showcase their very unique art style, with the prime colors being shades of gray, blue and purple. Sound and music also try hard to sound as alien as possible, creating a lot of atmosphere.
The game itself isn't as good as its presentation unfortunately. There's a lot of try & error required and the game gives little to no hints regarding what you are supposed to do. Basically you're just trying a few new clicks, until you get killed once again.
After not getting anywhere, I started consulting a walkthrough after 2 hours already. Then it was over rather fast though. Once you know what to do it can be completed in 10 minutes I think, as large parts of the game are just dead ends and the correct path is very short.
Considering the great graphics throughout the game, the actual end sequence is a real disappointment. You just get to see an ugly spaceship flying away, I didn't even bother making a screenshot of it...
Some future day the "Playing..." series may see Cryos first game in the form of "Extase", but first it'll continue with something else.
Greetings,
Manuel
