Playing Hero's Quest (DOS)

Hi there!

And so Sierra decided it finally was time to cross adventure and RPG games:

Well, I've been ignoring most Sierra games so far, because they usually require struggling with a text parser. After playing Manhunter not too long ago, which was completely menu driven, Hero's Quest positively surprised me again. A few years after its original release, Sierra produced a VGA remake with a nice point & click icon system. That version I could not resist to try :D

(Just for the record: The remake was renamed Quest For Glory, AFAIK because Hero's Quest was trademarked already.)

Quite unusual for Sierra adventures, this one got a lot of RPG elements: From the character generation to the combat system and stats boosting, from equipment upgrades to magic spells and potions, this adventure contains everything you know from RPGs as well.

Despite the recommendation in the manual for creating a Fighter class character for the first playthrough, I opted to play a Magic User instead. I find myself doing that often lately, I guess I got bored playing a fighter sometime in my past 25 years of playing fantasy RPGs ;)

During my first few hours with the game, I didn't actually get anywhere. Just by endlessly talking to everyone in the town and wandering through the surrounding forest and clicking everything in sight I somehow achieved 60-70 points out of 500, but even for just figuring out the first riddle I had to consult a walkthrough already... (Aha! So I was supposed to buy me a fetch spell!)

Of course, with my magician weakling I get killed around every 2nd corner, so I've been developing a habit of rather running away. Hopefully just surviving encounters also gains some experience points. Anyway - the first quest is solved, so we'll see if I can figure out something on my own again tomorrow :ponder:

Greetings,

Manuel

I had a ton of fun playing the Quest for Glory series. In fact, I enjoyed most of Sierra's games. Just this past week I spent some time reading Ken and Roberta Williams' website here:

I think I read just about everything on the site (not including the manuals and such).

Wow, thanks for this one, that's quite an impressive resource :D

Did you hear the news a few days ago, that TellTale will do a couple of Kings Quest episodes? I think right now they're still running Back to the Future and Sam & Max season 3, but they might arrive right after those.

Again with a little help from a walkthrough I managed to complete a second quest tonight. It seems I always need a little push in the right direction. Once I know *where* to do something I often manage to figure out *what* to do on my own :D

I also managed to add some more spells to my magic repertoire, I think I'm only missing one more spell now.

Else I'm missing things everywhere. Some spirit wants some spores, an ice giant wants a big fruit, a talking voodoo skull wants a glow-in-the-dark gem... I'm just totally clueless where any of these might be located... :D

So, tonight I spent a lot of time playing a little mini game against another wizard. Nothing special, but I've seen much worse mini games in other adventures :D

The third quest was pretty funny, I got transmogrified into a frog twice amongst others. What I did not like tonight were two riddles, which I actually did kinda solve, yet still didn't succeed:

- First I was supposed to bring fruit to an ice giant. I brought him 10 apples, but it didn't seem to work. Correct solution: Bring him 50 apples :D

- Second I was supposed to catch a seed from some plants. I tried the "Fetch" spell 3 times until I gave up. Correct solution: It does work after 5 tries :D

Brilliant game design, eh? :D

My mission came to an unexpected and sudden end tonight, when I discovered what I consider a game breaking bug.

At a certain point in the game a dryad must've dropped a magic acorn, which I was supposed to pick up. According to the official hint book this was the one and only chance in the game to get it and well - I missed it. Game Over. :D

Of course I could use the save state from the previous day, but I really don't want to replay the last 2-3 hours just because of yet another game design idiocy... :D

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Quest for Glory II", but first it'll continue with something else.

Bad game designer - no twinkie! (although I don't know which those particular infractions fall under). IMHO the first two are partially excusable if you were given some indication you needed more. (Giant like apples, but giant still hungry! The spell had no effect, but next time you might get lucky.)

HHGttG was infamous for requiring the player to do things long before knowing they were required. Forget to feed the sandwich to the dog and it's game over much, much later in the game.

Now that's one selection of really excellent articles! It should be a must for every aspiring game designer to read those! Thrice! :D
