Some time after 2007 (I don't remember what year), I was given a recliner. I wanted to use the recliner as a computer chair, so I took a leaf that wasn't being used from an old drop-leaf kitchen table, attached two pieces of wood to the sides that were a little taller than the arms of the recliner, then put casters on the bottom to make a rolling table. I put my computer keyboard and mouse on the rolling table and it worked great. I could have my feet up and use my computer (much better than a normal computer chair).
The recliner wasn't very good, so it fell apart over the years until it became unusable a couple of months ago. That's OK because I was given a La-Z-Boy Rocker Recliner around the time the other recliner died. The problem is that it's much bigger than the old recliner, so my rolling table wouldn't work with it. I tried using a cheap crappy laptop table, but it was too small, so I tried using a laptop thing that sits on your lap, but that hurt, so I could only do little spurts of work here and there.
So, for around 2 months, I've been floating in limbo, not being able to do much of anything on my computer (and having my arm hurt because I didn't have a good place to use my mouse). After a lot of searching, I finally found something at Amazon that is wide enough that it might work:
Kidney Top Multi Purpose Table
Here's what my setup looks like with a pillow under each arm:
I have a sheet over the recliner, like you should, and a Sobakawa Cloud Pillow on each arm of the recliner (pillows contain 'micro-air bead technology' not that buckwheat crap) for extra cushioning and so my arms won't get hot and so I can easily use the mouse on this new table without arm strain.
They ship it with the casters attached and no Styrofoam or plastic wrapped around them, so of course, one of the casters was broken when it arrived. Until they send me a replacement caster, I've temporarily replaced the casters with the ones from the crappy laptop table. Although the company that makes this multipurpose table don't seem to have a clue about packing, the actual product is nice. The table is thick, heavy, sturdy, and smooth (seems to be close to kitchen table quality) and the 'legs' or whatever you call them seem to be sturdy. The only problem is that the 'legs' use up more space than they seem to in the photo, so it won't fit around my recliner. I thought I might have to send it back, but I discovered that I can slide it up over one arm of the recliner and have the rest come up at a slight angle, so it basically goes across the whole chair. It's not perfect, but it seems to be working so far.
Now I can use my mouse without my arm hurting and use my computer as much as I want (and do things like working on my web site or using Visual batari Basic). Thanks Amazon!
