Predictions for 2012

Hey, it's that time of year again. We'll get this year out of the way right away, then move onto how I did last year.

Predictions for 2012:

  • I predict I won't make any predictions for 2012.

So, I'm already either 100% right, or 100% wrong, depending on whether or not you take that prediction into account as an actual prediction. :ponder:

The reason I'm not making any predictions, is that with Steve Jobs gone from Apple... they've become all-too predictable. iPad 3? Yep. iPhone 5? Yep. Killing off their Professional and Enterprise markets? Yep. Bo-ring. They were more fun to follow when everyone kept calling them "beleaguered".

That said, a new Mac Pro in a revised (lighter and rack-mountable) case would be nice. Assuming they haven't decided to just kill that product off entirely. But I'm not predicting anything there, one way or another. I bought a new iMac last Fall, and won't be in the market for a new Mac until, oh... 2016.

Also, the videogame industry has gotten all-too predictable. Or more to the point, I really don't care what they're doing anymore. 3DS? Whatever. PSP Vita? Yawn. XBox 720? Not a fanboy. PS 4? Also not a fanboy.

I still haven't bought a PS 3 yet, but I already have two games for it. It's just a matter of scraping up enough extra money to buy one.

I'm also not going to predict anything about projects I'm working on, or about this blog - such as when I'll get around to posting another "To-do" list. Although making a "To-do" list is on my "To-do" list.

I will predict, however, that Invision's useless blog software still won't be fixed by 2013. But that's not so much a prediction either, as it is a dead certainty based on their history of repeatedly breaking the blogs and removing useful features whenever a new "update" arrives. I'm just about beyond fed-up with it, and if it wasn't so much work moving this blog elsewhere, I likely would have already done it by now.

Anyway... let's see how I did last year.

Predictions for 2011:

  • Apple will finally release a Verizon iPhone. And people will flock to it. Then discover Verizon has their own problems, and complain about that. - Right. Just Google "Verizon iPhone complaints".
  • Apple will update the iPhone, fixing the antenna-uation problem. And something else people don't like will crop up, and they'll complain about that. - Right. Just Google "iPhone 4S complaints".
  • Apple will release a new iPad, that's lighter weight, has a camera or two, and more battery life and storage. - Right. See? Bo-ring...
  • Apple will remember they make computers too, and release OS X 10.7 ("Lion"). But it will come out so late in the summer, it will be effectively useless as far as getting it into schools for the fall is concerned. - Right. We're still on Snow Leopard at work.
  • Final Cut Pro will see a much-needed update this year, but it will be generally underwhelming, except for some stuff like facial recognition lifted from iMovie. - Right. But was more underwhelming than anyone would have guessed. Google "Final Cut Pro X complaints".
  • Still no Blu-Ray Studio Pro, or Blu-Ray players in Macs. Stupid Apple. This will force me to learn Adobe Encore, which I am not happy about. - Right. Although I have been learning Encore, and I'll admit it's got some nice features hidden amongst its quirks, bugs, and bad interface design.
  • Herb Alpert and "Weird Al" Yankovic will both release new albums this year. That's not a prediction - it's just cool. - Right. Both good albums, both worth getting, and if the blog software was working, you could click on the Music tag to find my reviews of them.
  • Tron will come out on Blu-Ray, at around the same time as Tron: Legacy. - Right. Also worth getting.
  • The original Star Wars Trilogy on Blu-Ray will be the stupid Special Edition versions. People all across the internet will heap vitreolic rantings on George Lucas, while simultaneously buying it anyway. The original footage however will be included as bonus material. Within a week, there will be a bittorrent of a re-edited version online. - Right. Although I don't know about the bonus material, since I got Episodes IV-VI only (skipping the prequels) and THEY DIDN'T INCLUDE THE BONUS FEATURES. Cheapskate jerk-faces. Fine - I'll find someplace to RENT it from.
  • Blah, blah, blah, XBox 360, blah, blah, blah. Whatever. - Right.
  • Blah, blah, blah, PS3, blah, blah, blah. But I will end up buying one, sometime during the summer. Burnout Paradise, GT5, Split Second, Mod Nation Racers and Tron: Evolution (despite poor reviews) have made that inevitable. - Wrong. Haven't bought one yet. But I did get Split Second and Mod Nation racers for my birthday. :)
  • Nintendo will hint at the next generation console that will replace the Wii. But it won't actually be announced until 2012. Their focus this year will be on the 3DS. - Partially wrong. They did announce the Wii U, and have demoed it as well. But they also did focus on the 3DS, by slashing prices trying to get people to buy the thing and releasing several games people actually liked.
  • There will be some pretty sweet homebrew games released for the 2600 this year. - Oops. Everything I was thinking of when I wrote that is still waiting to be released. (In fact, I don't think a single new homebrew was added to the AtariAge store all of last year.)

Bonus prediction from January 2010:

  • The (iPad's) potential for education is huge. If I was attending college this fall, and knew that my textbooks would be available for it, I'd buy one. The cost, relative to college expenses, is negligible. Besides not having to haul around 40 pounds of textbooks, you can easily type papers on it, record lectures, and run a whole bunch of useful (and fun) apps on it. I'd even favor it over a laptop, as an everyday portable. - Right. Took Apple awhile to really get onboard with it though, but they finally did so the other day.

Well that was all rather anti-climactic, wasn't it? I predict that next year, I won't even bother with writing up a "Predictions for 2013" blog entry.

But since that was a prediction for 2013, that doesn't count against this year's non-prediction prediction. :P

It is a pity that there were no AtariAge homebrew releases in 2012, but there are a lot of titles that I think are imminent:

  • Boulderdash
  • Panky the Panda
  • 21 Blue
  • Chetiry
  • Omicron

Some homebrew predictions for 2012:

  • The XM module will get released, prompting a flood of new 7800 titles
  • AtariVox will finally be available again
  • Boulderdash will sell out and immediately start to fetch high prices on eBay
  • There will be a 2012 holiday cart!
  • Harmony2 will see the light of day

I predict that alien spaceships will fill the sky some time in 2012 and we will be told that we better get on their ships because earth changes will destroy us all if we stay on this planet.

Actually, it'll be the pollution from all of the alien space ships that will do us in. Because if they're really "filling the sky"... that's a lot of spaceships!
