How do you pronounce...

It is almost unheard of to have a Q in English that is not followed by a U, but technically, it is the U that gives the QU combo its "kw" sound. Q without U should sound just like K.

So I've always pronounced it "KO-tile." But generally I avoid saying it out loud, lest I be viewed as more of a dork than I already appear to be!

You're correct with the pronunciation of the Q as a K. Hence, QO = "KO."

Following the long O, however, the "-tile" should be pronounced with a short "i."

So you wouldn't pronounce it as the normal word "tile," like what's on the floor of the White Castle kitchen, for instance. It would, rather, be pronounced with a "tul" sound. This is identical to the last syllable of "bottle" or "metal."

Therefore, the correct pronunciation, I believe, is: KOTUL, with the emphasis on the KO.

That reference came out of nowhere, rofl!

I love White Castle tho, don't get me wrong, yummy yummy!

By chance do you know someone that works there or something, Chris?

But I looked in the dictionary.

Qix is not in there (of course). But I agree that it has been pronounced KICKS by people.

There is NO word in the dictionary that starts with Qo

So I'd say that you CAN'T pronounce it, it isn't a word.

It is like trying to pronounce a word with just consonants like Zxik

or Cfvip

tho "o" is a vowel in this case. There are a couple words that begin with Qi

Some are prounched like CHI

so maybe it is pronounced:

Qotile

(Chotile)

It is a nonsense word anyways, so this is just guessing.

So waitaminute!

Does this mean Q*Bert is really supposed to be pronounced K-bert?

Arrrgh.

I agree, though, the english language has no rule for Qo therefore it is unpronounceable by English standards. People (ie game designers) ought to stop trying to be clever and learn a little more about language. :x :x

The English language itself has it's fair share of inconsistencies...

"Kwik mart all-nite olde tyme donut shoppe"

"That's why spelling bees are only won by ugly little girls." -Gallegher

BTW Q*bert doesn't really belong here, since the "Q" is seperate from "bert".

Just out of curiosity, I did a Google search for "Qotile."

Of course, almost every link that came up pertained to Yars' Revenge. But I was quite surprised by this:

http://games.espn.go.com/cbbpickem/entry?e...D=6812&period=2

I also did a search just for "Qo" to see if I could find any other words with those letters. A bunch of Star Trek Klingon-related sites came up. I noticed that the Klingon language looks a bit like Gaelic. Maybe if we have a Gaelic speaker on the board they could help us pronounce this...

Oh, and to StanJr: If not for the *, yes, it would be pronounced Kbert.

According to Apple's Text to Speech:

Qotile = KO-de-uhl

That sounds reasonable, but eliding the second and third syllable would probably be better.

Queue = KYOO

Not the more amusing KWEE-WEE that it looks like.

Oh, and Nukey Shay, what is this S.A.M. that you alluded to earlier? Is this some internet based speech synthesizer?
