I'm still working on the manual. I went for authenticity, rather than "quality".

 

The brainstorming session at my game company went something like this:

 

"Say, we need some artwork for our new game."

"Doesn't your son draw pretty well?"

"He's only 12."

"That's perfect. We'll get him a new set of markers as payment. Can he have it done tomorrow?"

"Sure. But I get his share of the royalties."

Thank you! It was a little of both.

 

Some trivia:

• The cart label was modified from Cosmic Commuter.
  
• The box art was modified from Mein Weg.
  
• The price tag is real. It's on my copy of Space Cavern.
  
• The Atari 2600 illustration was scanned from a Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle manual. I wanted something that looked cheap and shoddy, and Coleco was the first thing that came to mind.
  
• The address on the manual is real. It's a McDonald's in Hong Kong.
  
• The game number I used was inspired by a line from a movie. Can you name the movie and character who spoke it?

Scotty spoke that line as the second self destruct code in Star Trek III. Also Spock spoke the same destruct code in one of the original series episodes "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield".
