Flashback Portable VS GamePort ?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure that Gameport is finished. There site is gone and they didn't have anyone there but forum members running the place anyways. Atari's competition has now significantly gotten weaker IMO.

Didn't seem like it could get done legally anyways. Be interesting though if there were some prototypes leaked.

Ok so if you go to Gameport website it now says:

"The GamePort project has merged with Wanga! Please visit Wanga.tv to see our new product."

But if you go to Wanga.tv it redirects you to the Drupal website that has nothing to do with Gameport.

The same message comes from retrogamesllc.com which I found from the nameserver SOA record of wanga.tv

At least someone is starting to register domains. I wonder if it means something. Daydreaming? :?

so this is where everybody from 'that place' went...

My guess is that the website's going to say that wanga's a lower cost set top box, with the 68k functions everybody started complaining about, but whatever. It'll never happen. I'm sure there will be some postage stamp screenshots and 'what the heck am I watching' video. Or the whole thing could also easily be a "let's throw the name out there and see what people on the forums say they want it to be" thing.

I ended up buying another 800xl, and 'wanga' has a limited amount of time to convince me not to sink a lot of money into it, or at least attempt to gain what little forgiveness I have. Knocking their website down without notice wasn't the ideal way to keep support and then to bring the site back up again just to pump the next bit of filth--associating a new project with words like 'gameport' and 'retrogames' isn't wise.

trying to play with your wanga on a train sounds like a good way to get arrested

obscene console names worked for nintendo just fine. Really I think that's the only reason half those drones bought one. Of course for all anybody knows (or cares?) a wanga is a cell phone or something...

actually, at this point, I think I'm firmly in the 'go away and never come back' gameport camp. Or maybe I'm in the 'if anything comes out in stores I'll break and return them' camp. but that would require calories, and I'm trying hard to tell myself that gameport's not worth them.

Yeah, there's nothing more obscene than a play on the word "we".

according to noa, but I think they just make things up for english speakers. As soon as I unlock the 'goggles' level in wii sports I'll prove you all wrong...

  • 4 weeks later...
Today is the big day!! Currently at 7:40AM CST there is nothing. Any thoughts or predictions on what (if anything) will be presented?

at this point, my guess is that they forget to launch the page this month. possibly ever. But at least the placeholder page is still there. Given that there doesn't seem to be anything new up, I'm pretty surprised that is still online.

My guess is that placeholder page stays up until May, when the whole thing disappears, or the placeholder is altered to read "don't give up hope 08/08/08" or some other random date which will come and go. Hate to be so down on them. At this point I'm about willing to buy just about anything that's not a nintendo, sony or microsoft system. V-tech's 'V-flash' system is starting to catch my eye. I'm trying to decide if I am starved enough to go for pre-school edutainment.

Shame on you for not believing in Wanga. But there is hope, Wanga will soon merge with Bingo and then we have an even better product.

I really miss there old forums. You had that one dude from Indonesia or where ever that was into BBW. Then there were the endless supply of porn-bots that frequented the site. That moderator that was cool at first, but has since been held hostage. Plenty of good topics to talk about there. We really had ourselves a nice forum and they took it away from us. Now we get this Wanga! garbage.

I just want to see this Gameport make something of itself. I fear buying one thinking it will be another "Power Player Super Joy III" like transaction, but hopefully they got there stuff together after many months.

Side note, anybody remember these?

hmmm, according to west coast time, the day's over half over, and not so much as an update.

I do like the idea of an fpga based emu box which accepts external media. However the handheld idea is certainly optional. I also miss that forum. This one's nice, but it's a bit too atari-centric for me. It also lacks silly bbw threads, but at least it had more than 6 people on it.

Yeah, that wasn't the update I was looking for. They didn't introduce there system. If anything, it doesn't sound finished at all. These won't be released for a good while (if ever) I bet. I'm gonna guess that the price jumped to over the $100 mark now with the 16/32 bit support. Once again, I find myself let down by the Gameport/Wanga! group. :(

Huh - Wanga.tv is still an empty site with no info

The GamePort project has merged with Wanga!

The GamePort has just gained much more power!

Please come back to Wanga.tv very soon.

Development kits are going to be available shortly. Due to the limited initial number of kits, we will handle priorities based on the the planned usage. A form will be available in the next couple of weeks to determine order in the queue.

The GamePort project was bringing back to life all the 8bits; it's new incarnation, Wanga, can now handle all the 16 and 16/32 bit computers as well and much more.

We are currently looking for a few specific skills as well as the development structure is very different now. We are looking for people in art, molding, a few forum moderators, and are after some other technical skills too).

All the needs will be posted soon.

We want to thank everyone that has followed the project. Major changes have happened in our lives and we are now ready to bring the product to the world!

-that's it, that's the whole thing. the big release we all waited for .

these guys fail at customer service

I don't really think the fpga is really a huge cost. On top of that, there's no mention of it being a handheld anymore--which is a good thing. There's too much to mess up with a handheld. but you are right, probably over $100, but it was probably there to start with. and right now it sounds like the system is where it was before. it's a box that might be able to run 4 really old game systems. it just has the potential to do more now, which seems to be why they're looking for people to do something with it.

that didn't really count as an update. They could have at least faked one for us. A cameraphone shot of a board with an amiga game running somewhere off in the background. Sure it would have been blowing smoke at me, but I don't mind...

so the update specifically mentions needing forum moderators. plural, no less. There were only 6 freaking people on that forum, how many moderators did it really need? Why do I get the feeling we've all been pre-banned?

Yeah, theres no way they'll let us talk to potential customers. We know how this company seems to work and I'm guessing we'd be honest about it.

Chances are some punk kid will see me ask a question on what they've been doing for the past 6 months and I'll get banned for trying to start a riot. The Wanga! is a joke.
