Superchip games

What is a Superchip game, exactly? What are the advantages/disadvantages of it? I've heard the word before, but I don't know what it means.

The Superchip is an extra RAM chip that can be used with 8K, 16K, or 32K games. It adds 128 more bytes of RAM to the Atari 2600, which doubles the amount of RAM, so it lets you have better playfield resolution for RAM playfields, and more program variables in general.
