"Lord of the Rings: Journey to Rivendell",

from http://www.atariage.com/features/lotr/ :

I would be interested knowing how much was the box sold on eBay?

And other rather meaningles facts like how many bidders were there?

Where was the box found in the first place?

Was there any pictures with the auction?

(Probably at least the picture here on Atariage?)

And what do "mockups" mean?

(I'm finnish; didn't find it on dictionary :))

What do you think, any hope for more of these boxes to appear?-)

Is the cover art to be found anywhere else and

who might be the artist?

PS. I'm interested in buying the box / prototype / anything original

for this game 8)

(The Parker Brothers 1983 catalog I already have.)

From which catalog is the box shot on Atari Connection -site?

If I recall correctly (and I frequently do) the Lord of the Rings box was sold by a former videogame retailer. By the seller's account, Parker Brothers sent him three empty boxes to display in his game store to promote soon-to-be released but never released games. The boxes were for Lord of the Rings, The Incredible Hulk and Star Wars - Ewok Adventure, and each box featured full color artwork on the front but no printing on the back. Of course, no games nor instructions were included. The former game store owner received only one of each box; he paid nothing for any of them. They were stored away in boxes in his garage and forgotten for years until he discovered them last year. He sold each box in a separate, concurrently run auction on eBay.

Each empty box sold for an amount in excess of $800, but I cannot recall the exact figure. The boxes were claimed by well known collectors in the U.S., whom I do not feel at liberty to identify.

Are you sure about that Ben? I thought they went for $250-$350 each. Also, was there an actual Ewok box, or was it the "Revenge of the Jedi - Game I" box?

Cheers,

Hey Jukka, what part of Suomi are you from?

Hi, I'm from sunny southern Hanko.

Thanks for the info Ben!

Was there any pictures in the auction?

If there was, I'm sure someone has saved them...

Hiqh quality scans of the front and sides wouldn't hurt

(and why not the blank back?-) though I suspect there wasn't such, from that particular box anyway...

Would be nice to print the covers as DVD-sized :)

And I still have these questions:

Is the cover art to be found anywhere else and who might be the artist?

(The game/concept was obviously based on the Bakshi movie,

so might be someone involved in there.)

What do "mockups" mean in the first quote by me)?

BTW. Were the three Lord of the Rings comic albums based on Bakshi movie ever released on US?

Never see them on eBay or anywhere.

I think they are great and here's my page about them:

http://www.synchronic.cjb.net -> go to Collecting -> LOTR comics

(I have three spare comics in finnish for trade but only for something really interesting. F.ex. other languaged versions of the comics.)

A "mockup" is like the print or graphics design equivalent of a prototype. A mockup is usually a visual aid or prop used in early presentations. Often it's done by someone with very little direction and usually several different versions are made. Here are some official-looking definitions:

mock·up also mock-up (noun)

1. A usually full-sized scale model of a structure, used for demonstration, study, or testing.

2. A layout of printed matter.

mock-up n : a full-scale working model of something built for study or testing or display

Yeah basically the box looked like a normal PB box with artwork on the front, but was blank on the back. It was also shrinkwrapped, but that may have been done by the owner (who I also won't identifiy). As I recall it was slightly crushed as well.

What a burden, knowing so much, yet not being able to share...
