toymailman
Well, I went through my entire collection and tested all my carts. As I was doing this I made note of all the games that use the paddle controllers. I knew Atari/Sears made several paddle games, but didn't know how many others were out there. I count 39 below. I will update this when I go through my homebrews/repro collection. It would be cool if the AtariAge database had the controller type listed as a column on that page. Anyway here is what I found out. Atari/Sears Backgammon Blackjack (3-players simultaneous) Breakout/Breakaway IV (4-players) Canyon Bomber (4-players) Casino/Poker Plus (4-players simultaneous) Circus Atari/Circus Demons to Diamonds Night Driver Steeplechase (Sears-only) (4-players simultaneous) Street Racer/Speedway II (4-players simultaneous) Super Breakout Video Olympics/Pong Sports (4-players simultaneous) Warlords (4-players simultaneous) Activision Kaboom! Apollo Guardian Data Age Bugs Encounter at L-5 Warplock Imagic Solar Storm M-Network Astroblast (can use joystick, but paddle works better IMO) Parker Brothers G.I. Joe: Cobra Strick (3-players simultaneous, uses 1-joystick) Star Wars: Jedi Arena SEGA Tac-Scan Spectravideo Bumper Bash Starpath/Arcadia Fireball #3 (4-players) Party Mix #10 (4-players simultaneous) US Games Eggomania (4-players) Picnic Piece O' Cake
Tom_Explodes
Actually, you can see a list on the database. http://www.atariage.com/controller_page.ht...;ControllerID=2 What you do is click 2600, controllers, then click the Atari Paddles link. You get that list there.
Captain Beard
Dukes of Hazzard version 2! No wonder I've never been able to get this game to do anything... Just assumed it was for a joystick! D'oh!

Fixitguy74
Hmm.... I didn't know Astroblast could use the paddle. All this time I was using the joystick, but now I might have try the paddles to see if I can score better. I guess it's true, you do learn something new everyday.
shadow460
Did Sweat ever make it into the AA database? It uses a combination of paddles and a joystick.

I'm searching for a link for you now. Easter Egg Edited January 29, 2008 by SpiceWare

maiki
Can someone explain to me how paddles work in these games, please: Canyon Bomber - all that's controlled is fire button or am I missing something? Steeple Chase - does not seem to work, only joystick works Tac Scan - the same, joystick works, paddles do not Bumper Bash - the same Toyshop Trouble - ??? It is also sad there is no decent "Arkanoid" game with paddle support. I mean the original Breakout and Super Breakout are a bit simple and repetitive, and also too hard. I lose interest quickly. These games would work if they had paddle support: Belinoid Off The Wall OK, there is Fireball at least.

There's been a couple of efforts recently, but paddle programming seems to be a lost art. Edited November 22, 2013 by save2600

Steeple Chase - does not seem to work, only joystick works Tac Scan - the same, joystick works, paddles do not Bumper Bash - the same Toyshop Trouble - ??? Canyon Bomber - Some of the later game variations use the paddle (like the Depth Charge variations). Steeple Chase - The paddle controls how high the horse will jump. The higher he jumps then the easier it is to clear the hurdles, but the slower the horse goes while jumping. Tac-Scan - The paddles go in the right hand controller port. I didn't even know joysticks worked in the left port. I'll have to try that. Bumper Bash - I think this is just the paddle buttons. Toyshop Trouble - The paddles are used for the Easter Egg game. There is a link to this in a post above.
DarthDuke
I just got Demons To Diamonds on cartridge today. I forgot it was a paddle game. Thanks for this list! I sold all of my paddle game cartridges years ago when my paddles quit working and the two different sets of other paddles that I bought to replace them quit working rather quickly too. Now, I have Retron Ranger controllers with built in paddles that work fantastically, so I'm gradually going to buy the best of the paddle games again. Got Circus Atari so far (my grandma's favorite game when she used to play Atari with me) and now Demons to Diamonds.

It sure is. Millipede and Centipede are two of my favorite Atari games. I really wish they had paddle controls now that I have a good paddle wheel on the Retron Ranger. Even better would be a trackball controller for the Atari 2600. That would be sweet!

I really wish they had paddle controls [...] I've often wished for a paddle variant of Space Invaders: a faster paced/twitch version. Something that ramps up to a frantic, Kaboom!-like pace would be to my liking. I don't want it enough yet to attempt to code it. There may not be enough free processor cycles to add paddle overhead.

Being a paddle-games thread, how can you not have mentioned Medieval Mayhem? There are other homebrews which support paddles too, including: Avalanche Brik Drive Marble Craze Swoops! The Byte Before Christmas Ultra SCSIcide VROOM! And at least one more in the works... Also, on the 7800 side of things: Crazy Brix Super Circus AtariAge

chasco89
Hi there, I have a retron 77 and I checked the list to look for a specific game bc my retron doesn't play it. Super challenge Baseball? i know that the retron doesn't work with paddle controllers due to some incompatibility issue in the software, I believe. So I guess my question is: does super challenge baseball use the paddle controller?
DarthDuke
The Retron 77 has something better than the original paddle controllers. You can get the Hyperkin Ranger controller which has an excellent paddle wheel built into the game pad. It works very well with paddle games. When the console is turned off, you flip a switch on the game pad from S (for stick mode) to P (for paddle mode), then turn the console on. Pitfall Harry
Apollo made Racquetball. Racquetball is played with paddles. Does that count? How many paddle games can be played as well or nearly as well with driving controllers? -Ben
