"New to Atari" guide...

From comments and PMs that I've had here, perhaps it would be a good idea if you pinned a thread answering questions and giving pointers to people who are either new to the Atari 8-bit, or haven't used an A8 for so long that they are simply way out of touch with modern ways of using the A8.

Questons that should be answers could include:

*Where to find hardware, typical price and what to look out for

*How to transfer emulator files to run on a real machine

*Which A8 is the best to own for playing old and new games

*Which machine to use if you like demos

*How to upgrade the machines, ie, more RAM, faster processor?

*Best "DOS" if there is one available

*How to load from tape/disk and beginners guide to Atari

*What SCART/VGA adapters work, and where to get them

*Common faults with Ataris and easy fixes

*Good sites for learning Atari BASIC and machine language

All of this might already be answered on this forum, but I'm just thinking having it all in one place, for people like me ;-)

Regards,

Shaun.

The Atari 8-bit FAQ maintained by Michael Current has everything you need. I don't know the latest link to it but I am sure someone here does...

It is not an easy task to answer to all your questions.

Different people have different needs.

For example, I like easy solutions and I am not able to do electronic mods, so here are my advices:

Atari 130XE (128K, perfect s-video output with THIS CABLE)

+

if you want to connect Atari to PC, SIO2PC (AtariAge user classics sells this device, $30-60)

or

if you want a stand-alone solution, SIO2SD (AtariAge user Pigula sells this device, around $50).

Only few games need 128K.

So, if you don't want s-video but only composite output you can use an 800XL (64K) instead of a 130XE.

If you want to program in Basic, don't use the slow built-in Atari Basic but the faster, better and compatible

TURBO-BASIC XL.
