rjbaker
new Guy Here thought I would share: My son who is 8 was going throught the trash at a neighborhood home that recently had a garage sale and came home with a large Atari 5200 box containing game console, 3 controllers. Unfortunatly no games and seems to be missing the power supply. I wish I would of looked this site up that day, and I would of went with him to see what additional attari treasures were there. Any recommendations on finding a power source? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
mimo
First question is does it have 2 or 4 joystick ports?

doctorclu
A very nice find indeed. I have found myself kinda liking the 5200 as of late. Just get it a good controller really helps. Otherwise a good game system. But being based on the 8 bit computer line I think helps on that too. Yeh two or four controller ports in the front, we'll need to know that before we can advise. the.golden.ax
Awesome find! It makes you wonder how many moron's throw Atari stuff in the trash because, one half-hearted attempt to sell it, fails. The Atari ET landfill has a mind of it's own. IT calls out to its abandoned brothers, and compels people to add to the collection every day. Edited June 26, 2008 by the.golden.ax
shadow460
2 ports- I think the power supply is 12 volts and anything over 1 amp. There's a plug on the back that you will need to match up. 4 ports- Any supply 9 to 12 volts, at least 1 amp, and the plug does not matter. You will also need a handful of parts from Rat Shack and a soldering iron. Instructions on how to power this console up without the funky switch box are somewhere in this forum. The RF box in both cases can be substituted for an RCA to coax adapter. Edited June 30, 2008 by shadow460

mimo
4.0) TECHNICAL INFO AND HARDWARE SPECIFICATIONS================================================= 4.1 -- HARDWARE SPECIFICATIONS ------------------------------ CPU: 6502C (8-bit), 1.78 MHz Memory: 16K RAM Colors: 256, 16 on-screen Resolution: 320x192 Sound: 4-channel Power Supply: 4-Port: 11.5VDC @ 1.95A 2-Port: 9.3VDC @ 1.95A Note: You can ignore the power supply specifications. Both the 4-port and 2-port power supplies are functionally identical. As long as it's part #C018187, it will power either flavor 5200. Have trust in the console's voltage regulators to take care of things. If you have a 4 port machine you have to have the RF box thing. Make sure that you have the polarity correct or you will kill the 5200
the.golden.ax
I hope that guy comes back and posts some more. I really want to know if they get hooked on Atari. Hope so. AX

the.golden.ax
Very nice. I think anyone would pick through a garbage can with that sticking out of it. What kind of idiot would throw that away!? Do you have any games for testing? AX

cosmosiss
That box looks better than the one I actually paid for. 3 controllers all look to be in good shape If you're lucky, maybe you can conbine the parts from al three and get one working controller. doctorclu
That was an impressive find. The only thing I ever find in the trash is....................trash. Steve We used to find all kinds of Atari stuff in the trash... when the Atari service center was here in Texas. Anyway, so you need a power supply? I have the four port as well, so I'll look at the voltage on the power supply.
cyberfluxor
That's a nice find there, looks really clean too. With the monies you saved not purchasing a unit you should pick up a pair of Wico sticks and a trac-ball controller. You may want to post in the Marketplace for some games and accessories. Good luck! chuckwalla
That's very cool - and thinking outside the box! I've bought several power supplies from Best Electronics (2600, 5200, 7800, 800XL/XE)

Almost Rice
Are you sure? It looks like a Atari 8bit power supply for the 400/800/1050/xf551. My 5200 PS looks distinctively different.
Waterborn
Here you go. On ebay.http://cgi.ebay.com/Atari-5200-Power-Suppl...1QQcmdZViewItem I saw this and pm'd the guy to check the voltage/current, etc. The numbers did not match my power supply. I think that I may just order one from Best or try to do the power mod. I suck at soldering though, so I am a bit hesitant to do so.
Charlie_
I have 4 different looking, Atari brand, power supplies for the 5200. One of them is just like the one in that auction. Just says Atari on it and has the cables coming out of the same side.
