Finally got Private Eye!

Great game! More of a timed obstacle course than an adventure, but still unique enough to be a lot of frustration-laced fun! I got through Cases 1 and 2 last night (took me three hours...sheesh!). I can't quite figure out how several places on the manual's map apply to the actual screens -- I think the roads are intended to wrap around from right to left when there aren't shortcuts, but it's just an educated guess.

The only shortcuts can be seen on the screen, right? That is, there aren't any "invisible" roads up the middle of a location, found simply by testing if anything happens when you push the stick up as you pass the center? Just curious.

I've always thought that Private Eye was somewhat underrated. Maybe it just got passed over back in the day because it appeared so late in the game. It's a lot of fun, and extremely addictive. (Extremely challenging, too.) I keep telling myself that I'm going to finish all of the cases someday...

@Chris. Cases 3-5 are more adventure-like than 1 and 2. You will have to do a lot of exploring in Case 5 before it becomes a timed obstacle course. But that is a good assessment of cases 1 and 2.

@Stella's Ghost. Activision does rule. . . except for most of the games they made in the late 80's. River Raid II, Double Dragon, Rampage, etc. all suck.

I have Private Eye in my top ten 2600 games.

Case #1 is not big enough to be a real "adventure."

Case #2 is TOTALLY time based. Do it with a perfect score or with 25 seconds left and I will be totally stunned.

Case #3 is also a time based game, but there is MUCH more to explore.

Case #4 is the most true "adventure and explore" case of the bunch.

Case #5 is insane. Just insane.

I LOVE Private Eye

The games put out under the Activision name in the late 80's shouldn't even count as Activision! I agree that they're not as good as the others. The company underwent many changes during this long gap in releases for the 2600. They violated their formerly scrict principle of "games must be conceived and designed by the programmer" These late 80's games were ports of arcade games or other successful titles and were made by design teams or other guys releasing under the name of Activision. Even the box art and the instruction manuals were much lower in quality!! I still have the games though. Activision Rules!!!!

These late 80's games didn't even offer patches to earn or clubs to join. That consumer relations part of the genious of Activision was long gone by then. I corresponded with them very frequently. And they didn't even send me a letter to say goodbye!!!!!!!!!! :(
