intellivision

They're probably a horse apiece in terms of durability. I've got two Intellivision Is (a Mattel and a Sylvania) and an Intellivision II, and I've never had a problem with any of them. Well, that's not completely true; the RF jack is a little loose on my Sylvania, but it's not bad, and it probably has more to do with its original owners than the console itself (young kids and such).

A word of caution regarding the Intellivision II: BE CERTAIN IT COMES WITH AN ORIGINAL OR OTHERWISE TESTED, WORKING, COMPATIBLE POWER SUPPLY. The Intellivision II has a truly bizarre power rating (like 11.5 volts or something) and is not compatible with many other power supplies out there. And naturally, the correct power supply is a bit on the rare side. So if you find yourself with an Intellivision II sans the power brick, then you've basically got yourself a nifty retro-looking doorstop...unless you get lucky and score a loose Intellivision II power supply for less than the cost of your firstborn child. And in that scenario, also note that to turn the machine off, the power/reset button must be held for 4 or 5 seconds.

Another word of caution regarding the Intellivision II: whenever the Intellivision II is mentioned on these boards, there follows a chorus of complaints about the controllers. They're really not that bad. They're certainly not ideal, but no Intellivision controller is. Just keep in mind that the side fire buttons are really stiff and can't really be "pressed," but they are responsive nonetheless. Some gentle pressure is all that is needed.

But really, you can't go wrong with any Intellivision system. They're all well-built and durable consoles (the II perhaps less so, given that it was designed to be made cheaply, but it's still a fairly sturdy console). The decision on which model you choose really ought to revolve around the question of whether you would rather be able to use the ECS Computer Adapter and/or System Changer (in which case, you'd go with a II) or play Donkey Kong (why???) and a half-dozen other games that are incompatible with Intellivision II, most of which you probably wouldn't miss anyway.

Good luck, and have fun! :)
