1200XL PBI EXTENDER BOARD PRODUCTION RUN: ORDER HERE!

ORDERING IS NOW CLOSED FOR THIS PRODUCTION RUN

I should have the PCBs within 10 business days, and I'll ship them out directly..

Many thanks to everyone who went in on this deal..

Hope you made a little something for your efforts!

I wont make any on the bare PCBs, but depending on what I can get the cart connectors for, and what the exact shipping costs are for FedEX, I will probably make a few dollars per board on the assembled options.. Which is fine with me because it wont take me more than 10 mintes each to assemble them..

Can you make mine L-shaped so the MIO sits behind the 1200? :) That wouldn't be too much of a hassle, would it!

Stupid question, but is there some sort of support under the board? If not, isn't it going to bend and flex every time you plug a cartridge in?

Tempest

Personally... As often as I insert/remove cartridges on a 1200XL, I dont mind using both hands.. But theres 4 mounting holes on the board in case you wanna screw it to something.. A small block of wood & 2 wood screws maybe? That wasnt my part.. I made the boards, you figure out how your gonna use it..

That said, if your 1200XL is your "cart gaming" machine, I wouldnt put a PBI device on it to begin with.. Most people use an XEGS or 800XL for that.. the only carts you might use frequently with this setup are SpartaDOS X, Rtime 8, and maybe a programming language cart or two... So its not like your gonna be swapping carts every 5 minutes like you would with a 2600....

Ok.. Here's the instructions for installing it.

Before this will work, you need the following upgrades already installed and working:

1) 800XL/130XE MMU (C061618)

2) 16K XL/XE OS ROM (or ATARIMAX 32-in-one OS)

I am happy to answer any questions...

Good luck.

Is the MMU socketed? My 1200XL has a 4 in 1 OS on it (one of which is the XL/XE OS) already, but I'm not sure about the MMU.

Tempest: Yeah.. If you have a 27C512 EPROM containing 4 OSes, you damn sure have an MMU with a 16k ROM select.. Don't worry. Your machine is ready for the PBI board..

Yes, the MMU should be socketed.. I've never seen a 1200XL that wasn't fully socketed..

For those who are wondering how to do it, here are the instructions for upgrading the 1200XL to an XL/XE OS ROM (Taken from Bob Woolley's original 1200XL PBI mod article):

The 1200XL OS does not have the PBI code in either of its two 8K

ROMs, which means we'll have to either recode an EPROM or use the 800XL

or 130XE (same chip) OS ROM. Since many people don't have an EPROM burner

and don't want to spend $150 for one, maybe $5 or $10 for an Atari ROM

out of an 800XL (CO61598B) is a good idea. Also, it really isn't legal to

copy the Atari ROM into an EPROM, even for your own use. Even if you

destroy your source ROM, even. Atari was nice enough to provide an easy

upgrade path, use their ROM. OK? First thing you may find is that the

1200XL ROMs are 24 pin devices and the new ROM is a 28 pin package. No

problem. All of the 1200XL main boards have 28 pin sites for the ROMs.

All you need to do is pull the 24 pin socket at U13 and solder in a 28

pin unit. One more address line (A13) is needed, so remove the W6 jumper

and solder a wire from pin 23 of the CPU chip (U21) to the top pad of W6.

Now, plug the 800XL OS ROM into U13. The 16K ROM select is just as

simple. Take a look inside your 1200XL. See the chip that has 20 pins

(U14)? That is your MMU. It is the main difference between a 1200XL and

an 800XL. Same number of little pins, same number of inputs and outputs

..... But the 800XL IC has the 16K select for the OS ROM. So, lets jump

right in and swap the MMU with the 800XL part (CO61618). Fits just fine,

doesn't it? Pull out all the jumpers except W11, W12 and W9 and you have

a ROM select line that will select the address range from $C000 to $FFFF

in a single ROM, like the 800XL.

Interestingly, my 1200xl has one chip *not* socketed. The XL Delay chip. Everything else is. And that chip is socketed on my 800XL machines. Not sure why it was soldered direct on this one.
