X-box emulator (or BC)

Video

Recommended Posts

Ok, well, we went to a store and got a bunch of games, including some X-box games (regular) and put one in, and it says "the 360 can't play this game"

:? Ok, well, I know it's only about 90% compatible, so I just got unlucky, put in another game, same message, put in the third game, same message.

Now, maybe I just got seriously unlucky, the three games are Robocop, Chrimsom Skies, and Blood wake, maybe they simply aren't compatible, but I'm at my friends house and maybe, since he got the core, and the HDD seperate, he has to download the emulator or whatever. I just wondered how to do it (mine was a premium with the HDD and I never had the problem) Or maybe the games simply aren't compatible.

How do I find out, I figure go to X-box live, but is it something I have to go to through the menue, or a spacific place, or do I download it on a computer and hook up to the 360 or something?

Anyhow, thanks for any help.

How To Get Original Xbox Game Support for Xbox 360

Original Xbox® game support enables your Xbox 360™ video game console to play an array of games from your original Xbox video game console. A list of games that are currently backward compatible is available here and we will continue to add support for additional games over time.

Original Xbox game support requires a hard disk drive (HDD) accessory on your Xbox 360 console.

There are three ways to obtain updates for your Xbox 360 console:

* Update through Xbox LIVE®.
* Burn a DVD or CD.
* Order a disc by mail from Xbox.com.

Technical Support

* You receive "This disc is unreadable" error.
* "Can't play this game" or, in Halo® 2, "You have an important message from Xbox LIVE" error message.

Xbox LIVE Update
Getting the update free through Xbox LIVE is the best option because your console will be updated automatically as new games are supported.

In order to update your Xbox 360 console over Xbox LIVE, a broadband Ethernet connection to the Internet and an Xbox LIVE account are required. The Xbox LIVE account can be either a Gold or Silver membership.

The first step is to connect your Xbox 360 console to your broadband connection. See http://www.xbox.com/connect for details.

The second step is to create an Xbox LIVE membership or add Xbox LIVE to your offline profile, if you haven't already. A profile can be created from the Dashboard by pressing the Xbox 360 button and selecting "Sign In" or by pressing the X button. The Dashboard will take you through the process of creating a profile, but you need to select "Join Xbox LIVE" to finish creating the profile.

Your console will be restarted when you join Xbox LIVE, so be sure to save your game progress before doing this step.

You can also add an Xbox LIVE membership to an existing profile by selecting "Join Live" from the Xbox 360 Dashboard.

You will need to enter in some information to create your membership (such as name, age, membership type, etc.) The whole process is painless and should take about five minutes or so. Select any type of Xbox LIVE membership you want to get these types of updates.

Following the addition of your Xbox LIVE membership, you may be asked to update the software on your console. Select "Yes" and wait for the update to finish.

Finally, make sure you're signed into Xbox LIVE, and then place an original Xbox game in the drive and close it. This will start the backward compatibility application and cause Xbox LIVE to send an update to the application, if necessary.

Note: Once you have started this process, you must proceed to completion. Failure to complete the install process may result in your Xbox 360 being unable to play any games until you have finished.

Once this update is installed, you are ready to play any supported original Xbox games. Future updates will be installed automatically, as long as you are signed into Xbox LIVE when you start the original Xbox game.

Ok, well, I know it's only about 90% compatible, so I just got unlucky, put in another game, same message, put in the third game, same message.

Barely over 50% of the Xbox library was emulated, so I'd suggest checking out list from now on since there's an excellent chance the game you buy won't be compatible.

Wow, there's a lot more games on that incompatibility list than I remember there being (of course, I remember a few times people gripeing cause they took the games off, kinda the wrong direction there)

I got an xbox myself, I was just at a friends house, and never could talk him into getting one.

Heh, Oh well, I guess it'll never be BC, but then, thats why it took me so long to get a 360 in the first place, and why I kept the original box in the second place.

I think they decided based on the number of people actually using the BC downloads it wasn't worth the time and money.
If only they would have decided that from the get go before they released the thing. At the very least we'd all have 8gigs more HDD space to use for more important things (like 500+ Fallout 3 saves).

He's looking at the space unavailable to use (I think if you delete everything off a 20gig hd, you end up with around 13 gigs of free space), and incorrectly assuming its all for the emulator; when it's reserved for many different things like caching, with probably less than 100mb's being used for the emulator. It's a very small program, and a emulation profile update, if they added something like 60 games, always downloaded in about 1-2 seconds.

Not to mention a 20, 60, or 120 gig hd isn't really those sizes in actuality.

Where's the logic in that? That's like saying the GameBoy Advance shouldn't of been sold since in the end, it was selling in very small numbers. They didn't create and support the BC emulator with a eye toward benefiting the console and the gamers at the middle or end of the 360's lifecycle, it was done to provide BC while people made the transition. They stopped because the titles remaining were the most difficult/expensive of the bunch to emulate, declining amounts of BC emulation profile downloads, and decreasing amounts of gamers playing their original Xbox titles on the 360. They basically reached the point of deminishing returns in regards to emulating the original Xbox, where the work would be too expensive with too little interest.

Like Atariboy said, most of the space that is reserved on the hdd has nothing to do with the emulator. The emulator is very small. Again, most of that space is for cacheing, system files, etc. Also, as Atariboy said, hdd manufacturers call 1,000,000 Bytes a MByte while it actually takes 1,048,675 Bytes to make a MByte. This is actually worse when a drive is quoted in GBytes as the discrepancy is even larger. That means that the manufacturer reported size is not the size that will be reported by the system. A drive is almost always stated to be larger in capacity than it actually is due to this discrepancy. I have a quoted 500GB RAID0 array but the actual size as reported by the system is 457GB.

Anyway, Artlover is just grabbing on to another thing about the 360 to bitch about without stating actual fact. It is all in a days work for him.

The BC thing is such a travesty on the 360. They really should have made that a focus early on. Now it doesn't matter so much. MS should have taken the strategy from their rivals and implemented them: backwards compatibility (Sony and Nintendo), and new hardware iterations regularly (Sony and Nintendo). BC was really just a nod. I'm sure a bunch of focus groups would say this or that, but Sony and Nintendo have built whole generations on BC.

Sony cut BC from the PS3 on the newer models. I can't blame either company for not continuing. It must save them a good amount of money. Plus the prices on the older systems are low anyway.

That and the fact we here at AA who dig old video games are in the minority. Producers of anything rarely cater to the minority.

If it cost them time/$$ and most of their consumer base doesn't use it, they don't focus on it. They'll focus on what makes them the most cash. It sucks for the few that absolutely won't buy a new system if it isn't 100% BC....all 23 of them.

 Tell me about it, I was shocked at how fast Fallout ate my memory space, I was like :o Oh My GOD WTF LOL (granted I only had about 100 MB left to start with, but still)

I was surprised how little of the 7 or 8 gigs is actually for the X-box, I thought it was for simulating a X-box Hard drive for HD spacific features (without emulating the HDD, I suspect lots of games that used it won't work right)

To bad it's not going to everbe finished, but eh, in 10 years Ill have a better emulator running in pure software for my PC anyways, and a stack of original black boxes to keep me happy on original games.
