Warriorisabouttodie
I picked up R-Type Final for the PS2 today and it is awesome. I am reading about Gradius for the PS2 and thinking wait a minute are there other games like this for the PS2 I don't know about? I love retro updates like Tempest x/2k, Robotron 64, Gauntlet Legends etc... so far for the PS2 I know about Rtype (obviously), Gradius, and Contra shattered soldier. What else is there that you have encountered that I should be on the look out for? Any advice is appreciated.

REZ (Classic wireframe geometry, great soundtrack) Alien Homind (think Metal Slug w/Cell shading) SNK Arcade Classics Raiden III (Not great, its OK) Silpheed: The lost Planet Burnout (Classic Arcade Racing with cool crashes) Blowout (Think Contra) Taito Classics Gradius II & IV9 (Must haves IMHO) Metal Slug Anthology Ridge Racer V (Another classic arcade racer) Genesis Collection Namco Musem Midway Arcade Treasures Activison Anthology -Lee
shadow460
Seconded for Raiden III and Midway Arcade Treasures. Also, it's a PS1 title, but the Raiden Project is well worth tracking down. EDIT: If you get any of the Raiden games, get a good arcade style stick to work with them. Optional rapid fire is preferable since some of the cabs were built with it. Edited February 22, 2009 by shadow460
