Games on an Atari Stacy?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, I recently purchased a working Atari Stacy 2 which I have just got around to testing out today, apart from various software disks that I got with the machine I also have a collection of old ST games which I was hoping to run on the Stacy, nothing too graphically intensive as I already knew that the system had a monchrome screen. The problem I am having is that none of the games appear to run through the bluescreen mono display on the unit, I can get to the option menus but then the screen goes black (as if it has switched off) and all I can hear is the audio from the game in progress. My question to those of you who may have a similar machine is have I missed an option somewhere in the operating system, or is the Stacy just incapable of running standard Atari ST games through the mono screen? As I had always read that the Stacy was essentially a portable ST and also that it has a joystick port on it I just assumed that it would run my games okay.

Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Hmm, I played many monochrome games on my stacy without any problems on the internal screen... So be sure that you really use monochrome games which use ST-HIGH resolution... Anyway the Stacy is a nice "portable" video game console... If you have a scart cable, you can copy tons of nice games (e.g. dbug harddisk versions of original software you own) on it and connect the stacy to your TV... that beats out every sega genesis ;)

Hi. I've got a STacy too. Wonderful machines - I've been having a ball getting

to know mine, and exploring mods/upgrades for it.

One option is this - the STacy has an extenal color monitor port on the back

plane. I've tried it - it works fine. With a monitor like the SC1224 plugged in,

the screen shows up there, but the STacy's mono screen is disabled. Oddly

enough, sound comes from both the external monitor and the STacy's internal

speaker.

To play games on the STacy's mono screen, the game itself must support ST-High.

Fortunately, there are quite a few games that do this. Here is a partial list:

Not sure why I was thinking about this today... I wonder how hard it would be to hack a color LCD screen into the Stacy and wire up a Progressive Video Key? You could make the Stacy a color ST portable.

I've been thinking about this ever since I got mine! :)

There are problems to overcome though:

1. Power source - externally, or from within the STacy

2. Size - finding a size that will fit

3. LCD that will conform to the ST's output

I bought this unit:

http://www.ambery.com/rgbcgatovgac.html

and tried it out. ST Lo-rez is fine, games also play fine on it. However, ST-med is blurry, and parts

of the letters onscreen actually "drop out"... Fine if you're only going to play games, but I do a lot

more with my ST's than just that.

So I'm hoping that kjmann's new unit:

will work better.

I've still got high hopes :)

I'd like to add the games

Empire - Wargame of the century (I think the predecessor of Battletanks)

Die Gemäuer von Kalawaum (dungeons and that kind of things)

There are quite a lot of puzzle games that I don't have the titles in mind except for

Acctris (Tetris as Accessory)

Reversi (Accessory as well)

AtariGo

Shanghai

@ Darklord:

Do you have all those games in your list?

Do you have Stacy schematics?

Are Mega ST schematics ok for the Stacy?

I ask because the Stacy technically a Mega ST in a carriage box. ;-)

I just don't know if the layout is different or not.

Quite a few things are the same (chip wise) but there are also some

different features...

That internal power inverter, the SCSI card (identical to the one used

in the Mega STe), it has no blitter, unlike the Mega ST, etc, RAM and

TOS chips are in different locations, etc,...

Otherwise, much should be the same...
