otaku
I'm interested in getting an ST and would like to know how many (and what games) exclusives the system had as opposed to the atari consoles and other systems. Also Id like to know the best model and some sort of price guide available for both software and hardware?
Rybags
For the early 1980s games, it has less official versions than the 8-bit computers/consoles although of course both ST and Amiga had plenty of "clones", ie play-alikes under different names. For arcade games after 1985 or so, I'd say the ST had somewhat more than the older computers. Really, by the mid 1980s, computers were getting better games than what you had in the arcades anyway. Arcade games tend to lack depth, and games like strategy, adventure, and mission based games were poorly represented compared to computers. Best system? For games I suppose the STe would be the choice. Despite early incompatabilities, many have been "fixed" by hacker groups so that they work on the better systems like STe and Falcon. Plus you can easily upgrade the RAM in the STe just by dropping 30 pin SIMMs into it. ed - Price guide? It varies between countries, but even here you can get 1040ST basic setups for $25-$40. STe is harder to come by, so expect to double in some cases. Software prices? Doesn't really matter - practically every game can be downloaded free. Original software is fairly common so could be anywhere from a couple of bucks to $30+ for the rarer stuff. otaku
downloaded to the ST? The falcon is the nicest
Rybags
Most common way is to just download stuff via PC and write to 720K floppies. Falcon - nice for sure, but expect to pay probably 5 times or more what an ST is worth.
mimo
Transfer games to floppy on your PC with Floimg http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=140795 PC must have a built in floppy drive, a USB one will not work. Falcons are nice but very expensive if you are only going to play games, STE is the easiest to expand memory wise, but very few (if any?) games use additional memory. A 1040 STe or STfm would be perfect. If you are going to us rf on a TV, make sure you get an ST with a built in modulator.
