Deteacher
So, I'm pretty sure the the Rf jack is breaking away and needs to be re-soldered. I can get a picture if I play with the cable, but as soon as I let go, the picture goes out. The jack is very loose. I opened it up and to get to where the soldering needs to be done, there's a metal shield covering that section of the board. Can someone give me directions on how to get this shield off, please? I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance!
+save2600
Soldering that needs to be done would be on the underside... unless the female portion of that port is shot... in that case, you use a tiny screwdriver to press the tongue up high so it makes contact with the middle (male) pin of your RF cord... sorry for the soft porn explanation. You can cut away the shield or desolder its tabs in order to get at what needs to be resoldered. GroovyBee
Getting into the RF modulator box isn't easy. Its probably time to upgrade to an S-video mod if you are at that stage.
Deteacher
Thanks for the help. I have no problem cutting into the shield. Right now, the only way I can get a clear picture is to pull the Rf wire as tight as I can and tape it down. I've included pics for everyone to laugh at. Obviously, this won't work for long, but hopefully it will hold until I can devote some real time to fixing it right. Please to enjoy:

shadow460
It's been a while since I've been inside a 7800 (tight squeeze, let me tell ya, especially with Sally, TIA, and Maria all in there too) but IIRC, that's the same shield that covers most of the board. To remove it, remove the board first then twist all the little tabs until they are parallel with the slots under them. The shield halves and motherboard will come apart like a big electronic sandwich. It's not too hard to get it all opened up. Once you're in there, that's a great time to do quite a few mods to your system. It's also a great time to socket all the IC's if you're feeling a little masochistic. Yes, that's absolutely correct, but once you get the big shield off, you find that the Rf port is actually housed inside a smaller shield. I started to work on removing that shield, but I started getting a little nervous, not knowing what was on the other side. So, I came to the experts. It might just be easier to invest in a second system and keep the one I currently have as a parts machine.
Underball
It really is 100 times easier to build a composite video mode for the 7800 than it is to try and fix or remove that stupid clunky RF box.
Deteacher
Thanks, Underball. I'll definitely look into that. I have never taken on such a project before, but I'm not afraid to try.
Deteacher
So, where can I purchase a S-Video/Composite mod kit? I did a search through the forums and didn't find much. 8bitdomain is out of the question, based on the poor customer reviews. I went to Longhorn Engineer, but the site says they don't have any. I sent an email to oldschoolgamer...waiting for a response. Site says they don't sell kits, which is kind of the route I'd prefer to take. www.vikingvideogames.com appears to be a broken/dead link. So, does anyone else sell mod kits? As always, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the help so far!
Ransom
Longhorn's working on the 7800 mod right now. If you can be patient, that might be your best way to go.
Deteacher
Cool. Thanks for the info. I'm sure I can squeeze more time out of the flaky Rf port until I can get a mod from him. I've heard nothing but good stuff about LE.
